I have a PR3-2 head that is from a 96 spec JDM ITR. If it is from an ITR, it will have double valve springs on both the intake and exhaust sides, light porting and polishing at the valve seats, and necked intake valves near the valve head.

A B16 and an ITR head are the same casting. The difference is the valve train and the mild porting job. Your head is most likely superior to the stock ITR head.

There is a date code stamped onto the head. The circle to the left (the head is right side up) should be the year.

Sorry to bring up an old post but I have the same problem as the OP. I am curious if anyone can tell me what year this head is. It should be from a ITR (PR3-4). Its the year that has me stumped. Can anyone help?

Sorry for the fuzzy pic.

In case its too hard to read the numbers are as follows:

blank / 2
blank / 5
2 / 0
0 / 6 (or 9 / 0 if upside down)

It is probably 1990. In your picture, are the exhaust ports above the date stamp? If so, the year is to the far right.

Here is a thread with pictures of an ITR head that I sold.

No, the ports are below the stamp.

Here is the full size pic.

Perhaps it is from 2002. Honda may have sold it as a replacement head. Perhaps some of the ITR owners with 00-01 ITRs can look at their date stamp.

Does your head have everythings else that is supposed to be in an ITR head? My previous link outlines the features. Here are some additional links.

Thanks man. You have helped out alot. I have run down to the garage a few times checking different stuff out. The head does not have the green paint on it so I am concerned.

To be honest I have the whole engine but last time I tried to find out the info in the type R forum I was blazed by people claiming it was stolen. The VIN tag is gone but that is my fault because I ripped it off removing the engine from the pallet and my wife swept up the garage the next day throwing it in the trash. Needless to say I cannot simply check the VIN number. I want to know what year the engine is to buy replacement parts. Before I drop it in the car I want to change the timing belt and water pump but at the auto parts store I noticed they sell different parts based on the year (even though I was told all ITR's are the same). I was hoping it could be identifed as a ITR head without removing the head from the engine. Would the dealership be able to identify the year?

You can check the valve springs without removing the head. If you remove the intake manifold, you can see both the necked intake valves and the porting near the valve seats. The B16A, B16B, and B18C5 all share the same PR3 cylinder head casting. The ITR and CTR castings are hand selected, receive a mild port job, and have an upgraded valve train. If you have the valves, springs, and porting, the head is most likely legitimate.

I haven't removed the intake manifold but I did take off the valve cover. I see the yellow paint on the intake springs and the blue paint on the exhaust springs. That makes me feel better. The only thing that confuses me is the date stamping on the head. I would like to think the [blank / 2] for the first number would be for 2000, but the more I think that just doesn't make sense.

Thanks again for your help. I don't have the mystery solved but I feel better about the authenticity of the head.
