Default 1995 Honda Accord Speedometer problem.

My '95 Accord appears to have an intermittent issue with the speedometer. It'll be working and then suddenly it'll just drop to 19mph and stay there. Does anyone know what this could be?? Cable? Sensor? I've only had the car for a short while and this is the first Honda I've ever driven so I'm not quite sure where to start. Thanks!

If you had the "Service Engine" lamp coming on as well, I'd suspect the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). Without any additional symptoms, it points more directly at the Speedometer itself.
Does it do it after any particular event; ie: hit a bump, stop suddenly. ETC
.?

The sevice Engine LED is not on. It seems to be random. I'll just be driving along and then it suddenly stops working, no rhyme or reason to it.

i had this exactly same problem except after a while it became WAY worse. one minute itd register 0 and then the next id be going around 180. i bought a new speed sensor and it didnt fix it. i ended up having to install a new speedometer. its not much trouble, get a haynes manual and its a breeze. same goes for the speed sensor. if you end up finding out it sthe speed sensor i have one ill sale you for cheap.

Cool! Thanks very much! I will definitely take a look at the speedometer itself first. If it ends up being the sensor I will let you know. Thanks everyone for the help!

You're correct to suspect the Cluster/connection first.

When the VSS decides to take a powder, it will set a "Service Engine" Lamp, a DTC will be set and available to scan and it can effect no only the engine performance but the Transmission as well.
You're seeing none of that

a lot of ppl have been having this problem lately it seems. you havent considered replacing the VSS? its only a $15 shipped part, new aftermarket on ebay. from my experience, my CEL was very sporadic and random. it would not turn on every single time. just whenever it felt like it.

Does anyone know if the sensor gear (under the VSS) will spin with the front wheels off the ground and someone spinning the tire?

I'm trying to figure out why my new (JDM used) VSS is cutting in and out

W/ no disrespect intended, how true is this? I've been having the same speedometer problem and I was told that it was the VSS sensor in my tranny that was causing this. I haven't had the car too long as well. When driving the car kept hesitating until it finally decided to start stalling. After being told by some mechanics that this (the hesitation) was normal for Vtecs until I took it to a tranny shop (strictly trans) & they told me it was the 4th gear. B/c its a automatic (94 Accord Vtec 2.2L) nobody wants to rebuild it (my tranny people told me $2400). I just bought one from everdrive.com for $1000 w/ a 3yr warranty. That's the best that I could do. I'll have it installed for $250.

The VSS is geared to the transmission output shaft. If the output shaft is spinning, the gear will spin regardless of whether or not the wheels happen to be on the ground.
