Default Where to focus money for the turbo build?

Okay, been doing lots of research, I know the majority of what needs to be upgraded, pistons, rods, sleeves, valvetrain, fuel, engine management, lsd, clutch, etc. I'm going to have about $5000 to spend, and I don't think I'll be able to afford all the upgraded parts plus the actual turbo kit. I'm going to do 90-100% of the labor myself (me and my uncle). So where should I focus the money I have to spend? Or does anyone think the whole build can be done for $5k? And $5k is the maximum, I want to save $1k for emergencies.

for $5k i would go all motor...thats not enough money to build a fast and relaible turbo car, you could definitely build a fast na prelude....you already have an h22....

(sleeved ~1200)
Wastegate ~150
BOV ~150
Fuel pump ~100
Fuel rail ~120
Fuel regulator ~120?

I dont think you need a valvetrain upgrade for a turbo setup if you're cutting costs. 5K is close to being right where you need for a decent turbo setup, but not completely built. Building your motor is already 2K, 3K wont get you a nice turbo along with ECU and dyno tuning. Gotta get some more money or cut some corners haha.

have you seen my car? i think its a lil better than a decent turbo set up and build......... golden eagle sleeves, endyn rollerwave pistons, full race/manley rods, tuned with NEPTUNED, brand new precision pt61 turbo, brand new precision large front mount, new tial bov, new equal length manifold, 400whp, under 5k... enough said

with $5K i would build my own turbo kit, >$2000 easy.
Then the rest would go towrd a set of Mahle Gold series pistons and some manely rods.

But thats just me and I think that could make a mean 350+hp prelude.

Edit: Back to the topic, I say the Focus should go to forged internals and fuel management.

The engine build will cost a pretty penny, but shop around, wait for the good deals, and I'm sure you could build your own kit for around $2000

after you have all of your parts together. make sure you saved enough to invest in tuning. people like to skimp out at this part (i learned the hard way the first few motors, lol). get your stuff tuned by a reputable shop/person. Like KingPin said, said hondata and dyno tuning. My friends use crome, neptune, and a few go over to Jeff Evans. anyway, good luck with your build.

thanks a bunch you guys, i guess ill be saving a little longer. i should start keeping my eye out now for good deals on parts i need. the only thing is im iffy about piecing together my own turbo kit. i dont want to buy something uncompatible with other parts.

on a another note would it be a good idea to build the internals and drive it for a while (until i get enough money for a turbo)? is there any kind of break-in needed before a turbo should be installed after replacing all those internal parts?

replacing sleeves is not as easy as it sounds. the precision cut some of your stock sleeve and put in the new ones. as for the break in. any motor that receives new bearing or rings should have a proper break in.

You can try to do all of this for 5k, but first time around you won't pull it off. I also bet that if you try this build for this 'budget' you'll be redoing it again in the very near future. Honda engines have very tight tolerances and if your uncle has not sleeved a honda block before, I don't recommend he learns on yours.... unless you have another $5k to spend.

In my opinion, a GOOD turbo kit (turbo, IC, piping, oil lines, fuel upgrades, EMS, tuning) is going to run you an easy $4000 alone.

hmm, some say 5k is do-able some of you say not even close. dont worry about my uncle he's been a building cars for about 30 years. and not just muscle cars, hes built tons of supercharged motorcycles that run clearances/tolerances as tight as honda.

what would most of you recommend a good budget to work with be?
