Burning oil question on a B18C1.
Is it natural for a semi-built B18C1 to burn oil? It seems like after driving 800 miles it killed between 1-2 quarts of 10w30 Mobile1 Synthetic Oil........ because when I put in 2 quarts and checked using the dipstick its back to normal.

A teacher told me once(he used to build NASCAR motors) that putting synthetic in a brand new motor is not good. I forget why but I think it has something to do with not allowing the rings to seat correctly. I would try some non-synthetic for the first 3,000 miles then go back.

yeah you guys didnt really answer his question so i will most honda engines especially those equipped with vtec burn oil as they get more miles put on them it is normal for a honda to burn or use up a quart or a lil more than a quart about every 1000 miles as long as you check once in a while and add or change your oil youll be just fine. i know that what i said is a fact because i work at a honda dealership and get asked that question so often here and there
to reply to your question syntecs have a different chemical base in their oils tell you the truth you want oil that will protect against high engine stress and low engine stress. and a oil that has a life while in your engine. all those brand name syntecs are excellent oils but there life line in your engine is weak compared to the oil that honda recommends. honda oil which you can buy at your local dealer is mainly mobile one oil(syntehtic) that has additives which honda engineers have modified to make the last longer then leading brands and have great protection.

Where does the actual oil burning occur? I always thought it was leaking past the rings.

Sorry man, but I've got a D16Z6 with - get this - 199,800 original miles on it (I'll take a pic of the odometer if you need proof). The oil stays on the full mark between oil changes every time, even with a slight seepage out of the front main seal. Both the previous owner and myself never, ever had to add oil between oil changes. I drive the living crap out of it too. Last owner got it with 78k and put about 130k DELIVERY miles (pizza delivery, all hard city driving) on it. I've had it since 197k.
Now if you're running them to redline day in and day out on every shift, then yes, they'll burn oil, you're destroying the engine doing that. If you drive like a sane human then there's NO reason for them to use a drop of oil if they're treated decently, except worn rings, valve guides, or seals.
Also FYI - Castrol Syntec is a synthetic/dino juice blend. Or did you mean "synthetic" when you said "syntec"?
fasthatch - a few years ago that was the case, but many engines come from the factory filled with synthetic now. I'd still personally do the first 500 miles with cheap oil, the remaining first 3000 with decent 5w30, then make the switch to full synthetic.
For what it's worth though, Mobil 1 Synthetic does seem to burn off real quick. Try switching to another brand of synthetic and see if the oil usage goes down. A quart every 1000 miles should be giving some noticable smoke.

whoops, I thought you ment freshly rebuilt. Well you got your answer anyway

Any car, when you run it hard, burns oil. Synthetic oil is thin. Any crack, hole or anything in the motor, synthetic oil will find. And switching from synthetic to regular oil does absolutly nothing. You'll have to take the motor to a machine shop for them to clean it out. And also, if the motor has a million miles on it, you should expect it to burn or leak a little. It happens.
