1998 Accord probs: Instantly dies after starting
Im trying to help my neighbor out with her car. She has a problem which has me puzzled. Basically the car will start for 1/2 a sec and then instantly die. I know its not the starter as its actually activating and the car fires up for a few hundredths of a second but will instantly die regardless of how open the throttle is.
Apparently her aftermarket alarm is buzzing intermittently. You can hear it make a weird sound inside the car when the key is in the off position and she said shes never heard that sound before. Me not knowing anything about electrical doo-dads, i dont know the first thing to check when it comes to an alarm issue or kill switches ect.
She has no CE lights. I also disconnected each spark plug wire from each cylinder and grounded them to the valve cover and she didnt seem to be getting any spark at all except in the number 2 cylinder, but it felt VERY weak. Could it be a simple dizzy issue or is there anything else involved with Accords that I should know about. Im not too familiar with Accords as I own a 89 CRX. Please help as I really dont feel like toting her around anymore.
TIA

Three points:
1) The alarm may have an Ignition disable function.............
2) The vehicle may be involved in a Ignition Switch recall....
3) Master Relay problem
All of these could cause (their) problem.
A call to Honda with regards (vin number handy) to the ignition switch may get it to the dealer.
I'd start there.

1. is there a fuse I can pull to de-activate the alarm?
2. what year model accords are involved in this recall? Would the car even attempt to start if this were a problem? Like I say it starts, just dies.
3.where is this relay located? Is there a way to test it?

1) There is a 7.5 amp Fuse Marked "security" (position 18) which would effect the Keyless Entry and a Factory Alarm. If the car has a dealer installed Aftermarket Alarm, it could be anywhere.
2) Ignition Switch Recall: 1998 specifically
I believe in incompasses '96 thru 2002 model years
Recall date: 06-14-2002
Units potentially affected: 1,000,000
NHTSA campaign number: 02V120000
Defective part or component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
Description: On certain sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and sport utility vehicles, electrical contacts in the ignition switch can degrade due to the high electrical current passing through the switch when the vehicle is started. Worn contacts could cause the engine to stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the ignition switch. Owner notification began June 14, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 or Acura at 1-800-382-2238.
3) The main relay controls power to both the Fuel Pump and the ECM. It is located in the vicinity of the fuse box (interior).
