better pictures would help. It almost looks like you are dragging the torch straight down the weld. Use the manufacturers settings for welding whatever metal you are using. Then start at one point and do half moon shapes going down the weld. If you have a hard tiem doing that, do full circles while moving down the weld.

I tried doing a circular motion when welding the seams, but it only blobs up and creates a mess...where do I find the manufacture settings for certain metals?

Like anything else that technical. It just takes time and practice. keep it up.

this is the picture or welds right, you didnt get it mixxed up with a picture of chicken **** right?

jk it looks like a the right side of the weld was too fast of hand movement, and low heat. as for tyhe left side of the pic it looks ok from the picture, just not perfect.

Sorry guy, I forgot bout posting that stuff....I'm using a clarke mig welder(without gas) on a 3" Steel pipe, and I'll try to get better pics. Notice there are 3 sections where I welded(left: single pass, center: 2 passes, right: filling the gap)....

gas would help alot, you need to turn up the heat and slow the feed, from what it looks like to me.

it looks like you are just melting metal on top of the seam, and not actually welding the the 2 seams together

With shielded welding, make sure you weld AWAY from the puddle. Otherwise the flux gets in the weld and you will have nothing but pinholes.

Sheilding gas will really help with the welding. I agree, turn up the heat and down on the wire speed. You are getting no penetration. When you get penetration, the tubing will turn different colors due to the heat going all the way through the metal. With migging its not the same as a tig but you willsee a ring form around the weld. are you just welding on a piece of pipe or did you cut it and butt weld it?

cut the pipe straight on the chop saw or band saw. make one section 1" or so, so you can see the inside of teh weld. You want to see the color distortion on the inside of the weld as well. This means you are getting good penetration.

I don't have a chop saw or band saw, but have an idea what you mean by the rings... I plan to get some sheilding gas sometime soon, but I don't what what I'll need exactlly. What do you mean by welding away from the weld? Any pixors?

Are you using a gasless fluxcored wire? Or just burning metal onto a pipe? Cuz from the looks of the weld, it doesnt look like it has enough porosity to be a gasless mig weld with a gas protected wire. Use a z weave pattern, keeping a consistent width as you move back and forth. I have noticed that the circular motion creates too much heat, and just sucks all around for anything other than flat position welding. If you do a vertical up, or many other out of position welds, you will find it harder to use that technique.

Yea, gasless fluxcore wire. What do you mean "...enough porosity..."? I'm welding in my garage with a fan blowing on a low-mid speed above the part, but not directly on the part...I'm worried about breathing in the fumes.

porosity...porous...has holes in it...the amount of holes in it is insufficient....preforated...

welding away from teh weld would be if you were welding left to right, you want teh torch tip angled Away from your weld. the tip of the torch should be leaning towards the weld and the top away...

sorta like this

............ /

not like this

..........\

you dont want to lead the weld when welding like that. Straight up and down isnt necessarily the best angle either. Check out Millers website, there is lot of basic mig how to on there that is free.

try getting ahold of some scrap that is a little thicker and flat. that will be easier for you to learn on than piping. and like stated above

..................../ with your mig welder

flux-cored wire will help. clean what your welding with a wirewheel or grinder.

Alright, sorry for reviving an older thread...I could use some imput on these welds:

They are thicker metal than the above pipes, so...

turn up the heat and maybe turn down the wire speed. Turn up the heat first. Your mig welds should be slightly convex....not excessivly convex tho. Its not a skinny chick...but shes not fat...shes JUuuuuust right,
