Default Skipping gears

This may sound like a strange question, but is it ok to go from, say, 1st gear straight to 3rd? or from 2nd to 4th? etc.

I find that since it's such a high revving engine, it's a "smoother" transistion to go from 1st to 3rd. Please post your shifting pattern. I'd like to know at about what speed/rpm I should shift from one gear to the next. I'm a somewhat calm/normal/daily driver, so I'm not out to cut in front of that lowered civic to prove something. Besides, the S2K is too high up in the chain to have to prove anything... My main priority is gas mileage and a smooth ride. Don't get me wrong, I unleash it once in a while (went 105mph for the first time tonight... more to come!).

What I do in any 5 (or more) speed.
If I accelerate to the "speed limit" before i get to the last gear i just skip to it so like 3rd to 5th.
You arent going to hurt anything, just don't do it constantly.

Skipping gears are ok, but you risk wearing down the synchros if you don't let the countershaft slow down to the speed of the output shaft between shifts.

I don't, but that's just me. I do put it in neutral when approaching a stop sign/light at times though. But I always go to 2nd, then to 1st. I guess that's a habit of mine, when manuals weren't syncro in 1st.

Don't want to sound like a jerk. But skipping gears in the s200 is terrible for the syncro's. Go to s2ki.com and search and you'll see pics if the damage it can cause. Again, not to sound like a jerk, but you guy's shouldn't be giving adive thats wrong and could have bad affect on the tranny. Dont skip gears, it's not that hard to go from 1-2-3-4-5-6

I skip gears all of the time. Every single time I drive in traffic, I do 1-3-5-6 or 1-2-4-6. It doesn't hurt the car at all IF you let the revs drop. If you never break 3-4k rpm, there's really not much of a gap. The GM Camaro and Corvettes even have a 1-4 skip shift feature that locks out 2-3 when driving in traffic.

it is bad for the s2000 and shouldnt be done. My friend's dad has a cts-v that had to have his tranny replace/worked on (not sure which one) because of skipping gears. Again, don't skip gears in the s.

Skipping gears is only ok if you properly rev match. If you are just shifting, you are wearing down the synchros. I know this is going to sound harsh, but I would say there any many out there who do not rev match properly or for that fact, cannot shift well, so in general i suggest not skipping gears.

My definition of proper shifting: It is considered shifting gears but not feeling the chasis/tranny vibrate at all. Its as if you were in an automatic, you can feel the gear shift but it is slight. I have only met a handful (i can count them using my 2 hands), who can shift smoothly.

Downshifting should get a rev match also; it makes it easier to get into gear.

Or you can just let all the owners wear out their synchros, so that when they end production in 07, we'll have the only running copies! Shrewd? Yes. Smart? Hell yea!!

Are they really ending production in 07? I never knew that.

No one ever said you had to use all of the gears goin from 0-100. You choose which gear you want based on how much power you want. In my civic, If i'm at a cruise in traffic at 30mph, I'll use 4th cause the car doesnt need any more power, but if I gotta get to 60 real quick, i'll do 1-2-5. As long as you don't pull hard, like shift like a guy tryin to brake the stick, the synchros will do their job, and you'll be fine.

I have no set order on which gear I choose, if I need power, i go lower, if i dont, I go higher. most of the time I don't use 4th gear cause in my civic's tranny, its sorta useless.

This is what I've heard on many occasions. I skip gears from time to time, mostly right after getting on the highway.

ok so what is it then? i have heard in thread that it is ok and not ok? i personally do skip gears sometimes while trying my best to rev match and not ride the clutch at the same time. but what is the official word, if its not recommended at all. then i dont wanna continue doing it.

if you properly rev match when "skipping gears," there is no issue

if you do not, you will put extra wear on the synchros

You guys need to take auto 101.

Synchros try to match the RPM of the input shaft to that of the wheels before the engine re-engages with the clutch. So long as your not hard on it, it doenst matter where or when you shift. Example:

Common Honda problem...DX civic, redline it to 6750. your at 36mph. 2nd gear at 36mph is at about 3700rpm. so you want to throw the clutch in at the redline, pull it out of gear, but dont SLAM it into 2nd gear, wait maybe half a second (the RPMs have to fall anyway), and slide it in firmly (pretend your with a fine-class ho). But if you shift like in a tenth of a second, thats the synchro goin from 6750 to 3700 and no time to slow down, and you hear that eeeeeeeeeeeeeerrr sound, which is your synchro hub's teeth yelling at you, which means the synchro cant grip fast enough, cause you didnt give the synchro time to slow down the teeth.

If your shifting anything easier than that (like 3000rpm difference), just shift slowly and you will not wear your synchros. Its not a big deal, even if you do wear em a bit, first off its gonna take 100k miles to really expletive em up, the car will still shift and lock in gear. Look up "clutchless shifting) to further understand how synchros work..

Sometimes If I get bored, yeah I shift from gear to gear without the clutch. If you've never tried this, don't practice on your own car, hehe.
