Default Temp gauge innacurate, or something else?

So here is the deal.

I have 1993 Civic CX with a JDM B16 and an EX cluster.

When I start the car in the morning, it takes the temp gauge like 20-25 minutes to reach the normal operating temp spot. However if I turn the heat on in the car the guage drops below the C mark. If I start the car on a cold day and have the heat on the whole time, I never see the temp guage go above the C, but the engine is warm enough obviously because VTEC will engage.

Also if Im at a stop sometime the temp guage will go up (to where its supposed to be), but as soon as I start moving it goes back down the the C.

So I have a feeling it may be my cluster. I had the cluster in before my swap so Im not sure how to diagnose it.

Anyone else have this problem?

it could be a few things...such as cluster, sender, or even a thermostat.

In what order should I check things in?

If it's the thermostat wouldn't it be either stuck open or closed?

Correct. If it was stuck close your engine would now be a very expensive piece of molten scrap metal.

Your problem definately sounds like an open thermostat. You can try covering half your rad with cardboard and see if on the highway or just cruising it stays a bit warmer, if this is the case then the probability of a stuck thermostay is almost 100%

Yeah I suppose it works okay. My car takes so long to heat up though that it seems like the heat will never come

You definitely have a stuck (open) thermostat.

I second that. My car did the same. Dont cheap out on ur thermostat, get a honda one from the dealership. Also dont forget to buy enough coolant to fill it back up when ur done. Should take you about an hour to do. You could clean ur rad at the same time, that never hurts.

Everything in the cooling system is new. Wish I would have known this when I did the swap.

Can I use a thermostat from a USDM Si, because I have a JDM B16? If so I will order one from Honda now.
