Default Put a new alternator in today...

Yep. I searched before I did it and found advice on a couple of ways to do it (one of which is how I did it). This won't be a step-by-step write-up because the pictures will speak for themselves.

The parts:

For starters, it does drop out of the bottom of the engine bay with a couple of things out of the way. I partially removed the wheel/tire, wheel well lining, and the lower alternator bracket.

Lower alternator bracket:

With the pulley facing up it dropped out with no problems.

Now...to put it back together

The alternator is ready to make its ascension up to its new home.

...view from the top

we set the alternator to the side (past the lower alt. bracket and re-installed the bracket)

Put everything back together I was planning on doing a more detailed write up, but I'm kinda tweaked out right now. I was on the phone with my friend about an hour after we finished working on my car. I'm sitting here at the computer and hear my alarm going off...I'm like WTF mate and go out to inspect. I turn it off only to have it turn on again. I turn it off again and then unlock the door so it won't re-arm itself and at that time I notice light under my hood (the kind you see in between the fender and the hood when the headlights are on....OH ****! MY LIGHTS ARE NOT ON!!!!! OH NOES!!111!! I turn the headlights on, pop my hatch, pop my hood and go grab my fire extinguisher out of the back. I run around to the front and pop the hood. My god damn batchery is in flames...I spray it with the extinguisher, pull the battery out, dump baking soda everwhere, pull the pan and then came inside to have a beer. I only had one tie down holding the battery and that was sheared in half??? I tell you what that is one hell of an alternator. This should be an example of why you should always go with original Honda parts

Really, I don't know what the hell happened. I will look at it in the morning. It's been sitting for about a week and a half and I just did the alternator today. I was happy that it was running and was looking forward to driving it to work tomorrow....guess not I'm just glad it wasn't early in the morning when I was asleep and woke up to a pile of ashes...here's the aftermath.

Thanks, everybodyshould have a fire extinguisher in their car. I'm just glad it was a small fire and I didn't have a car-b-q in my front yard. I'm going out in a little bit to check it out, but I was wondering if anyone here had any guesses as to what may have happened. Personally, I think the battery was toast to begin with and we had to give it (2) 'quick boosts' on my neighbors battery charger. I dunno.

Regardless, I'm going to have to buy a new battery and cables. I was looking at getting the Optima Red Top because Costco has them for a good price...everytime I look in the book though it only shows something for the yellow fitting in a CRX. If you have one ( a red ) what size are you using? Also, I'm going to need some new cables...I do have the power for my amp running to it and want heavier gauge cables with bigger blocks up top so everything isn't so crowded.

It was a post of yours that I was following when putting a new alternator in. Thanks for the good advice I wanted to document it w/ pics for the next person that needed to know how to do it. I just need to figure out what the hell happened to my battery.

do you think it might be possible your positive cable terminal was shorting out on your battery bracket?

although i guess thats what fuses are for. check your fuses anyway, see if any are blown, especially the main fuse.
