Replaced waterpump - Still Whirring noise
I replaced my waterpump and the accessory belts. When the accessory belts are off (alternator, power steering) I'm still hearing a whirring noise down where the crankshaft is.
It's kind of like a whir whir whir sound. Could it be my oil pump or maybe some other bearing. I didn't change the tension pulley.
The whiring noise is louder at warmer engine temperature and doesn't go in when pushing the clutch.
Anybody with the same situation and solved this???

There's that red dust that's in there. It's always been there and I just replaced it a few months back. The sound doesn't come from there though.
The timing belt is kind of new (46,000miles). It runs great now that I replaced a seizing waterpump. That whirring noise has me somewhat worried. I hope I don't have air in my coolant system.
Problem solved. It's the timing belt tensioner pulley. I removed the lower timing belt cover (after removing the crank pulley of course) and listened with a screwdriver up against the tensioner bolt. Makes a hell of a whirring noise. Also when the car starts up cold, I could hear a slight squeak sound even with new accessory belts.
Can't wait to fix it tomorrow and not have to worry about timing belt issues anymore (at least for a while).

You just have to take the timing belt off of the pulleys. You don't have to remove it completely from the car and you can leave the engine mount on. So doing this job is pretty easy.
I changed the tensioner and it still makes that whirring noise in the same area. I think my timing belt was stretched a tad by a bad waterpump/tensioner. It might not be fitting 100% into the belt grooves. Man, I'm stumped. Any other possibilities???
I'm going to check my dizzy assembly to see if it's starting to seize up eventhough it's not making any noises. Years ago it was making horrible screeching noises and I took it apart and added WD-40 to the squeaking parts. It stopped squeaking but now maybe something is seizing up inside.
My brother had the same problem, i think i know exactly what your talking about... He took it into our local honda dealer and had them adjust the tensioner pully like u said.... I think maybe tou just need to play with it a little bit. he went back like 3-4 times b4 they got it quite right. dont give up!
Thanks!! That will be the next thing I'll do is re-adjust the T/B tension. At least I don't have to remove the lower cover (if I don't skip a tooth that is).
Ok, I pulled the dizzy and definitely no seizing at all. Moves very easily. I'm now getting that rattling sound like the waterpump is going at low RPMs while in gear. After the new waterpump was on, this sound went away and it's back
!
While the engine's hot, the upper rad hose seems to have air in it since it seems squishy yet the overflow bottle is at max. Are there air bubbles in my coolant? Headgasket failure? I fear there is an air pocket near the waterpump and it's running dry. Now I'm totally stumped. Could it be that my camshaft bearings are seizing up?

That's it!!! My theory is that a head gasket failure is causing air pockets to get into the coolant and making the waterpump run dry.
I get the ping/rattle sound under low RPM while in gear. After I replaced the waterpump, it went away but the whirring sounds stayed. I think I have more than one issue to deal with. I'll try and burp the air out of the system tonight.
If I see exhaust gases coming out of the coolant, most likely a head gasket failure. I guess.

ok next step is to check the timing belt tension. Several places on the web show the belt should twist 90 degrees between crank and cam. Tight belts do make a whirring sound. If the sound goes away then good.
If the sound remains, then i believe the head is warped putting stress on the camshaft which puts stress on the belt. At this point I'd have to get a newer cylinder head that is flat.
More money to spend on an old high mileage car....

my buddy that works on these cars says that it is the new water pump at work...after awhile, the whirring noise will go away...no worries...i had that happen on my swap when i swapped a b16 into my hatch...now it doesn't whir anymore...
