Default surging idle

i searched but didnt come up with quite what i was looking for.

this is a 93 lx sedan no modifactions.

today i replaced the spark plug upper and lower tube gaskets, headgasket, pcv valve and grommet.

did a valve lash adjustment

tightened throttle cable

replaced spark plugs

it was running great, way better than when i got it a couple days ago.

known problems when i got it.

oil in spark plug tubes...fixed today (see above)
half the air filter was stuck againts butterfly valve in TB (fixed as soon as i found it)

nails used as spacers on the battery terminals (previous owner did this) the positive lead doesnt need it, good tight connection, ground wont tighten down correctly so i left the nail in so i could run the car and i will fix after pay day friday.

needs new rotor, cap, and plugs

also has alternator whine

now to the idle issue.

when i first start the car it idles fine, no problems whatso ever.

when i start moving down the road and stop at a stop light or sign the idle will go to just above 500 rpms, lights dim, car almost dies. then it surges back to the normal 700 -800 rpms, then back to 500 then to 700 and so on, until i turn off the car and turn it back on...then down the road will start again.

so based on what ive given you guys, what do you think it could be?

A surging idle could be anything from a loose/disconnected vacuum line to a dirty iacv.

Check your vacuum lines and if it persists then I would clean your iacv. Here is a link for help: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/sh...=IACV

You know you don't want the throttle cable to be too tight, it's supposed to have a little play. If you tightened it enough to just barely bleed air without changing the TPS value significantly it would act just like a vacuum leak. Just something you might want to check.

i had the same problem...your fast idle thermal valve is dirty. this happens when you dont flush your antifreeze system and your sensor forms "hard water scales" on it and the sensor cant read the temp of the water going through it. take the sensor apart (dont damage oval oring!) and scrape out the buildup then flush your antifreeze system and it will quit surging. youll be surprised how much scum will be on it!
