Default Auto Shifts hard, but thats not the issue, losing tranny fluid..

my auto was shifting harder everyday.. blaw blaw we know how this ends but today,

i got feed up and cheaked my fluid level, it was shot empty.. i was speachless..

so i went to this advance auto place, got some tranny fluid there... yes i know it isnt "oem" but i dont care when its 7pm and driving dry. So i went to my girlfriends house and use her yard to change my fluid, but i couldnt her dad didnt have a breaker bar, and it was pitch black. So i couldnt see to well; instead i refilled the 1 q. of tranny fuild i was missing.

took a test drive....

it shifted nice and smooth again.. i was like wt?

before the test drive i looked at the bottom of my tranny and saw this

im not too sure where the leak is coming from, but its pretty bad when i tried to clean it off.
Any you guys can see where the leak may be coming from and how much this mieght cost me to fix?

What year is this?

I have the same issue with my '99 2.3l. I'm almost 100% sure it's the axle seals.

Being winter here, I don't feel much like crawling under my dirty car. I've been keeping an eye on my fluid level from under the hood.

No spots on the garage floor, however. I'm not sure if most of it goes while driving? I've been reading more and more about the 6th gen trannies..and it doesn't look good.

your trans is toast if you drive it for a lot of miles with low fluid like that....

It's just a matter of time before it quits

But the good news is that this is a good oportunity to look into automatic to manual transmission swaps.

If you can, the next time you are under the hood look for a little sticker that tells WHAT YEAR THE CAR IS!! If this is a 99 with both axle seals leaking it means the differential bearings are bad and replaceing the axle seals is a waste of time.
From the picture you posted it looks more like the fluid is coming from the torque converter housing that would mean a bad torque converter seal or 'O'ring
