Default wiring issues

i'm swapping a JDM ITR 97 spec motor into my eg hatch, it comes complete with wiring harness and stock p73 ECU...i did some research regarding this swap and basically they say use p72(obd1 GSR) ECU instead and use USDM type R wiring harness and convert from OBD2 to OBD1...my question is that is it mandatory to use p72 ECU? or is there a way to wire up the swap using the p73 ECU, thanks a lot for help in advance

it would be easier to run a chipped p28. if you really want to run the p73 then get an obd1 to obd2 or obd2.5 conversion harness depending on the year of your p73
