Default OT: need help choosing a ride for a friend

I know I'm not usually the jackass posting these...but a friend of mine is looking to get into the performance thing. He drives an automatic Tercel now, but he finally decided to get rid of it after riding shotgun while I raced Dean/alexboy's JunIII'd GS-R.

I may try to get him into autox and road courses eventually, but for now he just wants something that will handle decently and is kinda fast in a straight line. ITR/WRX/RSX-S is out of his price range until he graduates I think - anyone have any suggestions on a car for less than $10K? I was thinking used GTI, hybrid Civic hatch, maybe Sentra SE-R...any other ideas?

Either the hybrid civic hatch (just make sure he doesn't post here or he'll instantly be labeled a theif) or the Sentra SE-R (classic only, none of those beam axle POS ones )

He cand find them anywhere in his price range and they handle pretty good. IMHO.

Civic hatches and drop a B16 or get a S13/14 and drop a silvia(SR20DET?).

Check the se-r.net classified. There was a '93 SE-R w/ 36,000 miles selling for $8,000. If everything is in great condition, that would be a sweet ride to own. Oh yeah, I think it was in NY area... not too far from you guys.

Other obvious choices (well, at least for me):
1. hybrid
2. galant vr-4
3. 240sx hybrid
4. '94 MR2 turbo
5. AE86
6. 92-95 Prelude
7. Syclone
8. Typhoon
9. CRX Si
10. ITR
11. Miata R-package
12. Mitsu G2 GS-T or GS-X
13. E30 M3

(way off topic now...)
13. bmw 2002
14. datsun 510 + rotary
15. honda cvcc
16. Ford Escort RS Cosworth

I was thinking an early G3 teg...but I'd feel terrible if his car got stolen, as Tegs are wont to do.

Craig - having problems? you could say that. I think the car just hates me. but that's a story for another thread. Keep the replies coming guys...Sean, that's a solid list, thanks bro. he reads HT occasionally, so maybe he will see this.

I'd say an E30 325, handles well, reasonably quick (if he gets an I or IS) and they have potential. One of my good friends has one with a built 2.8l (~230hp, 200+tq, crank) and he rolls me on a regular basis, turns and all.

That would be a great choice but he doesn't have the $$ to fix a BMW when it breaks (and it surely will). ITR parts are expensive enough for me...he wants nothing to do with that.

yeah...and even regular rpreventative maintenance is a lot of $$. Modding them is quite pricey too.

How about a Mazda RX-7.

Very rarley do i see a 93 for less than 10Gs. Insured argeed value according to Chubb is 13,995. So if you pick one up for 10 and wreck it, you can make off with 4Gs if you play your cards right.

7s are WAY too much of a problem for only 10Gs you need to do about 3-4Gs in reliablity mods jkust to keep it semi-reliable and the if the apex seals go. hoboy!!!

Dave- who wants a 7 badly, but not as his daily driven car.
