uhh... did you take off the timing belt & exhaust manifold? You said you didnt take off the intake... did you unbolt the intake from the bracket that it bolts to on the block?

uhh.. to get the head bolts out i automatically would have to remove the timing belt.. i had no idea that the intake was bolted to the block anywhere.. i know it isnt on any other of the b-series that i have worked on.. if anyone could confirm that there are bolts attaching the intake to the block also please let me know and if anyone could come up with a picture showing this i would greatly appreciate it.. thanks.

Yes there is a bracket back there that is holding it on. I remember that from when I did my swap.

Yes you do need to take the intake manifold off if it's coming off with the head(i assume he is doing this to keep from having to replace that pain in the *** intake manifold gasket.
look:

see that black bracket to the left? I believe there are 2 studs on the bottom of the manifold that go through it and there are nuts under there, or maybe bolts that go through it into the manifold, not sure but regardless i'm pretty sure you will have to get a wrench/socket on the underside of the intake manifold.

I used a couple long extensions from underneath the car to reach the IM bracket bolts and it was a breeze taking them off and putting them back in when I put my head back on.
