Default Smog

well I just got back from smogging my car and it didnt pass!!, Anyways, i had just finished rebuilding the motor and i expected it to pass but i didnt change the plugs and plug wires, the man at the smog station said it wasnt anything big, just that the emissions is just above not passing, but he said that my catalyc converter may be bad because the reason i rebuilt my motor was because a valve broke, so now i have to figure out what can be wrong, any recommandations about my problem will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Pelon1987

yeah I know, but I mean the motor is like brand new except for the small things, so tomorrow I will start to replace all the small things, besides I'm mexican, I can easily get around "things" but thats not the point for me because I still want to find out why my car didnt pass

Pelon, hope you figure out why your ride doesn't pass. Try running some seafoam through it, then make sure you run it hard for a couple hundred miles before you go and smog it. Sounds like you haven't burned all the oil out of the catalytic just yet. Run it hard and you should be Okay.

if you barely failed just change your spark plugs, wires, do an oil change, and probably replace your catalytic converter... that should do it since your motor is rebuilt.. also just leave your car running once you get to the smog station..

post up your numbers that way we can see where you failed and by how much. If i can see the numbers you put down plus what the average and max allowable for your car is, i can tell you what is causing the problem.

make sure you run the car hard for about 30 min before you go in to test.. If you barely failed then try putting a bottle of alcohol in with 1/2 a tank of gas and run it for 1/2 an hour then go in and test. My buddy's car failled soo bad in like 3 different catagory, then we put alcohol in there, it passed every catagory except one.. then we went down and took out his cat and realize it was hollowed out. lol.. so if you're barely failing that should get you through it.

There is no need to run seafoam in a new engine.

Post up the numbers, A lot of guys have failed and then figured out what was wrong, Do a search and see what you come up with.

I cant even start to imagine how much hell is must be for yall California guys to have to put up with that smog stuff. I guess I'm lucky that my state doesnt have emission laws(yet). Good luck with your tests.

You're almost there Pelon. Have you double-checked that the EGR, vacuum hoses and ECU are working properly?

no I havent done that, but my permit to get it smogged ended today, and i had to get the car to "pass" by other measures, but i'm still gonna replace those things because I know that it is something real minor or just bring my car up to good performance again.
Anyways thanks for the comments, keep them coming.

i'm telling you.. you're not failing by too far. Toss a bottle of alcohol in with 1/2 a tank of gas... run it for 1/2 an hour and go in and test.

im a smog tech put a new cat on, done deal. seafoam ur engine? the point of that is to clean out all the carbon build up in ur engine, if your car failed for NOX i would do that, but ur fine in nox,
oh and check ur egr? once again thats only if u had a nox fail

its pretty funny how ppl give false advice eveywhere, change this change that.

you barely failed on HC , hc is hydro carbons, hc is unburnt fuel, ur cat is not doing its job at low speed, but when you hit the 25mph test you pass ur cat is the problem garunteed.
if u had a fucked up valve then that would def kill a cat.

nox is what MOST hondas fail for, nox is cuased of combustion temps reaching over 2500 degrees, combustion temps! not engine temps.

what happens at 2500 degreres? nitrogen and oxygen get married and have a baby called NOX, nox is what is part of photochemical smog(the smog we can SEE with our eyes)
so what can cuase high nox? carbon build up in a engine artifically raise's compression..what happens when u raise compression? you get more heat, more heat more chance of nox.
egr malfunction
cat malfunction
to far of ADVANCED timing
overheating
fan not coming on.
goes on and on.

all your readings are good, and just shows ur cat is worn and tired. please dont replace plugs and wires, all u need is a new cat.

Pelon, all you need is a new catalytic. Run the car for 20-30 minutes, make sure are your vacuum lines are connected and add some fresh fuel to the tank. You're almost there, a new catalytic will pass you ASAP.

The best way to pass the car is legally. There are plenty of legal ways to pass the vehicle at the smog shop. If you have any smog related questions, email me.
