Ok my freinds CRX started smoking and running like **** the other day after a race. He says the oil light came on and it lost power. There was also excessive blowby, when he pulled over and popped the hood, the dipstick had blown halfway out and blew oil everywhere. We drove it back to his house and pulled the motor out, and pulled the head. I figured it was a blown headgasket or a broken ring. I cant see where the gasket was blown. There was oil in the Intake Manifold when we pulled it off also.
We have a y8 gasket and head, and a spare d15b7 block. Im trying to figure out whether I should chance it and use the a6 block w/ y8 gasket and head, or throw in the d15. We would rather use the a6 because we dont have air to get the flywheel off the a6 to put on the d15.(d15 FW is missing) If anybody can tell me anything by looking at these pics id appreciate the help, tryin to get this finished tonight...

Cylinder #2 I believe it is...
Looks like its been burning oil there..
See the combustion chamber that is all black?
The two middle cylinders don't look so hot...

Yeah I know #2 is burning oil, but im trying to figure out why. I didnt see how oil could be getting into the combustion chamber via the head gasket so maybe its a ring? I need to know if I can throw this block back in with a new head and gasket and be ok.
he was racing that motor? please tell me its boosted or on the bottle.
cant really tell from the blurry pictures..... but i think the block still looks good.
slap the vtec head on and give it a try. what do you got to lose? if its popped, borrow an impact gun and swap in the d15.

I think you broke a ring. The reason: not only is ther a lot af burnt oil in the cylinder, there is also a lot of o il in the intake manifold and BEFORE the throttle body. If a ring breaks, the blow-by is increased a whole bunch, pressurizing the crankcase everytime that cylender makes a compression or power stroke. Since oil windage is everywhere in the crankcase, including the space under the valve cover, it pushed oil out the breather and PCV vents. Did you check the Cylinder wall for gouges? That's my theory.
The reason I think it is not a valve seal is there is a lot of oil in the intake manifold. If the valve seal leaks, it is usually on the intake stroke (when there is vacuum pulling oil through it). Anyway, just my opinion. Good luck.

Thanks for the help man, there are no real "gouges" in the walls, just wear on the sides, keep in mind this motor has 200k+ on it, and they werent easy miles. The guy hasnt changed the oil for a year either. I can run my finger in the walls and it feels pretty smooth, but you can see where they are worn. Would a broken ring make a gouge?
Also before we took it apart, when you turn the motor over, it would sound like one cylinder was low on comp. Im sure you know what I mean if youve ever heard it. Kinda like the timing was of a tooth or something.

wow
wow
yea i vote rings, looks like theres no sealing going on whatsoever = excessive blowby = oil in the IM/EVERYWHERE!! just hope the walls are still true enough to save the block. good luck
It's ring and HG. All that white **** on the 1, 3 and 4 exhaust valves is deposits from running tapwater in the coolant. Also it's hard to tell in the pic, but it looks like the HG is gone between the 1 and 2 and the 3 and 4 cylinders. Maybe it's stuck to the block? Please stop being so cruel to that little motor, fix it, change the goddamn oil and tell your friend to sell it and go buy a Kia.

CSP Solo II perhaps, can't add stuff like that. I hope nobody boosts that thing...

ok just pulled the pistons out...no cracked ring but the #2 and #3 top comp. ring was stuck and the pistons were badly scored. I told him this was probobly from the old *** oil breaking down under such harsh conditions and high rpm. #1 and #4 were fine though. We just threw the y8 head on the d15, we'll get the FW off tomarrow and get it running. Thanks for everyones help im glad I didnt try to use that a6 block.
great, so he fried the rings to the piston.
That's that you get from using old oil. It completely loses it's viscosity.
Tell your friend he's a retard and should start thinking about a diesel. These will run on deep fryer grease if you want them to.
