black smoke problem when downshifting
ive searched and didnt find exactly what im looking for. the other day i had a lil fun in the freeway with my buddy and when i downshift, my buddy behind says alot of black smoke comes out. what causes this?? am i safe to drive like this?

black smoke isnt usually oil...that would be a blueish tint type smoke...dark black smoke is usually a rich condition

just keep an eye on the oil. If you're not running an aftermarket/chipped ecu, and only have i/h/e then you're probably not running that rich, and if you are it's not going to be anything too problematic at this point
If you want to run a chipped ecu, then you can optimize your a/f ratio so it doesn't burn rich and eliminate the black smoke.
But I say keep an eye on your oil levels cause it's an old gsr; they tend to burn oil and blow dark smoke (black/grey)
as for the blue smoke; I thought that was usually a head gasket issue...

Isn't it usually a white cloud, when the headgasket is going.

coudl be your cat too... the change in pressure loosen up some soot inside your pipes when you shift... or o2sensor, would cause you to run rich

well im not sure about this but i heard if you dont beat on or really get on your car for awile the carbon and black **** can kinda build up in your exhaust. so when you do end up getting on it the quick exhaust flow can blow some of it out lookin like black smoke. just what i heard correct me if im wrong.
