how to check tranny fluid levels?
no, that would be more of a syncro problem. its its not major yet, go ahead and flush the old tranny fluid out and add about 1.5 quarts of Honda Tranny Fluid and a bottle of Lucas transmission fluid. It works for me for another 8 months or so.

you can - undo transmission "fill" bolt , and simply put ur finger inside the hole and feel for the "level" - it should be just at the base of the fill hole. If below just top up until it slowly leaks out of the hole.

Can it be done through the VSS hole too?

yup the proper way is as i said above - check your manual or online manuals and they mostly tell the same tale. (use a finger via the fill hole)
The VSS is the best way to fill methinks , just be careful retightening those 2 small 8 or 10mm bolts holding the VSS inplace *snap easy*
