Default Funny thing i saw on a dx motor today need some help though on it

If anyone has looked at 89-91 crx dx or civic from around that time u notice the injection and the throttle body which is well stupid. Most people remove the copper/bronze peice inside "the black box" above the throttle body which is about an inch by like inch and 1/2 which allows a lot better air to flow, well I noticed this one guy today removed the black box and so its pretty much like running open from the throttle body, cept on the dx the tb faces up instead of out to the side, how bad is this besides not having a filter.

I dont know if its bad, but its probably not getting as much air as it should be. But then again those import drag cars run 4 of them pointing up, but they are totally different.

Do you mean the Butterfly (valve) that covers the hole leading into your throttle body. This is why I ask, when i took the cover off the top of the "Black Box" there were two things I thought about removing to allow more air.
First one, I did remove. It was a Metal plate screwed down blocking most of the intake hole allowing only a small amount of air to enter the box.
The second was the butterfly(valve) covering the exit from the box into the throttle body.I thought about removing that also, but wasn't sure exactly why it was there?I looked past the butterfly and I see the throttles butterfly further in the hole.So can I remove the first one? Will that allow more air or will it just cause problems?
Any info welcome.

I think he's talking about a gold anodized perferated dome over the throttle opening. What it does it do? I guess it keeps the engine from injesting field mice and small birds the 1.5 powerhouse sucks up with its incredible suction. Thats the only thing I saw on my old DX engine that sounds anything like he described. Its still laying in my driveway.

from my experience when i did that...(removing the flat bronze color wall and the screen dome)i had a rough air/fuel mixture.i had to adjust the timing and end up regapping my plugs so i can have the right spark and the air/fuel mixture. in a certain point...there isnt really any HP being gained...except spending more $$ for gas.

my suggestion is...dont waste anytime doing something that wouldnt work.

Well I removed the bronze elbow peice and the strainer looken peice, but this guy removed the entire black box so all you see is the throttle body facing up, so no way to hook an intake up

That metal piece actually smooths out the incoming air and creates a "swirl" in the black box. Smooth air entering the TB creates more power so they say. On a 70 or 91 hp engine it makes no difference though.
My gutted 90 civic hatch std, 4-speed, with a 93 civic dx head, intake, and exhaust, ran a 11.0 in the 1/8th. Do the dx to si swap first and you'll start to see gains

I agree that the only way your going to see any worthwhile improvements is to do either the MPFI conversion or get a more powerfull engine. Don't spend much to do it, you can get a ZC for about $650 depending on where you live. You won't get the DX engine pushing that power level for less than twice that much money. And except for some minor wiring mods and new ecu it bolts right in. If you really want to fly get a B-16 and one of the lower geared B series gearboxes. There is a BIG difference between those boxes though the are interchangeable outside of the Cable /Hydrolic issue.
