Default Raz Cams Stg II tuned results with VTC.

I finally got everything completed on my custom camshaft project. The custom VTC gear was well worth the effort. I think this pretty much cements my car as the highest HP n/a k20a3 car in the country with the fastest n/a 1/4 time soon to follow.

Versus the stock cams:

What a difference the VTC makes. Just look at that torque!

Now that you are making peak power, how is this for daily driving, very lopey? How has this affected MPG?

Thanks

the idle is lopey. Driveability is not bad at all though. The car is pretty difficult to stall out and overall gas mileage is about the same. I get better gas mileage when I drive conservatively, but if I rev out all the time, I get only slightly worse gas mileage. It's amazing what a good tune can do for gas mileage.

Hey, congrats on success with the custom cams. This was the Floridian lingering around the shop that Wednesday while you were tuning the fuel on the turbo'd... How did the tune go?

why didnt you finish the baseline pull on the dyno. cause that run ended right around 6500rpm down provide for a fair comparision between the 2 runs to be honest with you.

Hey, I remember you. Things ended up pretty well with the turbo car. we just need to re-schedule another dyno session for him. He was making more power at 7psi than he was making at 10psi with my forced induction cams.

I have plenty of pulls with the stock a3 cams + stock valvetrain and the peak power occurs before the stock redline in all cases. I used to rev out my stock cammed a3 to 7700 at the track, but it wasn't making anymore peak power past 6500rpm or so and would start diving really hard after that point. On the stock dyno reflected in this post, I did see a few more peak HP right around redline, but believe me, had I revved it out, the power would fall. You don't even have to take my word for it. find any k20a3 dynos and see what happens to power production after 6500rpm.

Even if I had revved it out, do you honestly think that the stock cams would have started to close the 20hp gap that had already been built? I think the dyno comparison is plenty fair as far as showing how much better the Stage II cams are from 3500rpm on up.

How about you find me a stock cammed naturally aspirated, stock bottom end, unported head k20a3 motor that dynos within 10hp?

Realistically speaking, my engine makes more power than a k20a2 + i/h/e + k-pro. This is speaking from the standpoint of having tuned a couple of type-s's on the same dyno. I could post up some comparison charts if you'd like.

All I have to do to push these cams is take people out for a quick 10 minute ride. No dynos, no timeslips, it's just that obvious how much more powerful the motor is versus stock.

for ***** and giggles, how about a comparison with a k20a2 + i/h/e + k-pro?

The type-s had aem v2 intake, dc shorty header (retained stock cat), greddy exhaust and about an hour of k-pro tuning.

Nice to know what can be accomplished w/o a swap.

JEEZ is that on a stock bottom end? I'm surprised it holds to 8500 rpm. nice numbers

yep. 100% stock bottom end.

I have been very pleased with how well the bottem end has taken the abuse. people just needed to give the a3 half a chance before writing it off.

I hope this one is more "fair" then. As you can see, the powerband goes flatline with the stock cams after the stock rev limiter and it really starts to tank after 7500. Those extra few rpm went a long way towards closing the 30hp gap!
