Brake clean will slightly discolor the shade of red.
Carb clean will make the paint flake off.
SO will Throttle plate cleaner.
Haven't tried simple green... but if you want to be 100% sure it looks brand new when you're done, wash it with regular dish soap or some kind of hand soap, and let it air dry.

I use simple green a and a 2" paint brush. do this when the engine is cold. cover up anything you don't want getting water on.. alt, dist, etc. rinse the cover with water, spray the simple green on, scrub with the paint brush, rinse off with water when done. take off the coverings, start and run car around the block. cover should be looking good as new. I do this to my entire engine bay with no problems. I also spray the engine bay down with armorall when I'm done to make it look shiney and new. good luck.
I took the advice off a post a few weeks ago and used Vaseline on my valve cover. It worked really good.
I did not apply the vaseline to the valve cover with it on the car. I put a cut valve cover on there in the meantime so i can install and tune the cam gears. OEM valve cover look brand new now. BTW, make sure you clean it good with degreaser first and then use the vaseline.

No. Nick, like myself, doesn't give a rat's *** what his motor/car looks like and would rather spend the time driving the car on the track/street/whatever. I agree with him 100%. If having a clean car is your thing, do it, that's cool. He was just stating his opinion, nothing wrong with that.

To those that don't clean 'em, remember, dirt adds weight...
Don't use simple green. It strips the Cadmium plating off bolts. (those lovely golden ones...)
I use the stuff we have at work... Not that this helps anyone at all...
