Need a new transmission??
Ok my car is making a knocking sound when in neutral..
but when I step on the clutch it makes a swirling sound then its silent.
And in 1st gear usually above 2500 rpm it makes a grinding noise and in 2nd gear the grinding noise isn't so bad.. 3,4 & 5th gear are sounding fine.. shifting is smooth in all gears too..
If i try downshift from 2nd to 1st it makes a really high pitch sound like a saw so i don't even try it anymore.
Also makes a clicking sound when I'm rolling at slow speeds.. very embarrassing in parking lots
I just changed the tranny oil with acura MTF today and it still the same.
Checked my axels & cv boot and no problem there either..
So does this seem like the tranny needs to be replaced?

I've got the same symptoms and through my research on here, it seems to be the input shaft bearing. BauleyCivic did a real good DIY on inspecting it, so search for that. I'll be replacing mine as well as the clutch and the other bearings in a few weeks.
I had the same symptoms. Took my car into get the clutch and throw out bearing replaced.
It turns out that the clutch was almost new, the throw out bearing was okay, and the reaking noise continues. It must be a bad transmission bearing.
Im going to start looking for a tranny too.
Does anyone know if the transmission for a 97 civic EX needs any manual transmission for that civic year or does it have to be the VTEC tranny?

could be any d-series hydro tranny but gear ratios are different

Thanks for the response Penies Hatchie. I figured it was the input shaft from reading the other threads.
I called around, and a used Japanese transmission for the EX model is going for about $500. and they will charge me about another $150. to instal it. Its kind of pricey, but that noise is driving me nuts. Its freaking embarrasing. And it sucks because I just spent $300 to change the clutch.
So is the input shaft replaceable? Or should I just get another transmission. If the input shaft is replaceable, how much does a job like that go for?

i have the same problem. it's the input shaft bearing.. i bought a spare tranny from a y8 for $215 and will replace it whenever i find time. i'll eventually try to get the other one fixed then sell it.. or keep it as a spare.
Thanks for the info guys im going to wait until I get my tax refund money to do any repairs. For now i'll just get use to the embarrassment cuz each time the car slows down it makes a really loud clicking noise.
Sometimes I don't even want to release the clutch because of the noise!!

I know what you mean, Whenever i go anywhere there are people I know i press the clutch so that they will not think im rolling on a total clunker. Its freaking embarrasing, I swear. Im going to keep looking for a transmission to do the swap. I found a few other places around here in L.A. I'll call them tomorrow and get a quote.

When doing a clutch job, people will typically replace the throw-out bearing and the pilot bearing (the one in the flywheel).
To the OP: It really does sound like your input shaft bearing. The bearing is ~$25. If you're mechanically inclined and have a second set of hands (and a Helms), try it yourself. It looks more complicated than it really is. Me and the old man got the whole job done in around 5 hours - from removing the tranny to getting it back in, that is.
Look up Bauley's post on replacing it...but I'd still recommend a Helms by your side.

It will also help if you have somebody helping who has cracked open a tranny before. Here is a great how to on doing the basic removal and replacement of the clutch:

I can't wait to do mine in a few weeks.
