HelP! b16 tranny problems
so i went 2 the races last week I race 4 times. I jump on the freeway and like 15 miles away from my house I tried 2 downshift and I coudn't get it into gear. The only gears I had was 4th,5th, & reverse. I never had problems, no grinding or anything, gears whent in nicely so WTF happened? Can it be fixed?
Thanks in advance 4 ur imput

Well, you said you couldn't get into second but then you said you only have 4th, 5th and reverse? Did you loose 1st and 3rd also? Sounds like bent/broken shift fork...

How is a fluid going to majically make a gear come back? The fact of the matter is that while changing fluid viscosity might help for worn out synchro teeth, its not going to repair broken/bent internal parts.

GM Synchromesh is not the solution to every transmission problem...you can mislead a lot of people into that misconception....

Exactly
Best thing to do is check your linkage firsthand as it is the easiest...disconnect the linkage and use a punch tool and try to shift into the gears directly to the shift link on the trans. If that is a no go..then you will need to remove the transmission and open it up to see what is wrong internally

You commenting at me or at Gearspeed? If you're making that remark about Gearspeed then you really don't know who you are talking about, do you? As for me, I didn't claim to be a know it all, but I do have well over 7 years of experience doing this crap for a hobby and a living... so I guess you could say I have learned a thing or two.

I'm not looking for power. I'm looking to help people learn. There is a difference.
What does "its an open forum" have to do with anything? No one told you to leave. I simply said synchromesh isn't going to fix internal damage. This should be obvious. Everyone rides the synchromesh ****. It gets old.

Relax...we just stopped a little misconception thats all. Its what it is all about! Nobody said you were a moron or didn't know sh#t. We all help eachother out and nobody is better than anyone else, just more knowledgeable in certain areas. Allows us to learn from one another

no they didn't fall off. I try 2 take more close-up pics, but like i said before 2 me it doesn't look bad. nothing looks broken or worn. I never seen the inside of a tranny so i might be wrong.
thanks 4 all yall help

Had this problem on my old Eclipse. Turned out to be a simple spring which decided to snap. So, I made a new one out of an old coat hanger wire. Worked

First of all, before you or anyone else re-assembles this transmission, that ring on the top of the mainshaft with the tab on it should be flipped upside down. The tab should be facing the gears, not the bearing.

That missing chunk does not look like it's for the shift fork detent. It was a check ball in there that was probably installed when the case was machined. That section is also on the top of the trans. (when it is in the car) There are no shift forks or shift fork detent ***** in that area. They are at the bottom. The hole next to it corresponds to the reverse idler shaft.
I'm not sure what can be done as far as repairing that case because I think there is an oil passage there.
Also, why are all teh shift forks shifted in the down position? This should not be possible unless you've removed the selector mechanism. Please take a pic of the opposite side with the shift forks so we can verify whether or not they are bent. I doubt they are and I think the check ball in the case just got free and jammed a shift fork.
Where in Socal are you? I'd like to have a look at this transmission first hand.

Y'know, upon futher inspection of that last pic, it looks like that hole is for the transmission mount bolt. Probably went a little far and broke off a chunk on the inside, jamming a shift fork or the shift mechanism.
You say you found detent *****? There should be only two detent ***** and two detent springs removed if all you did was remove the case.

Happens quite often!!
I would suggest getting another case
and a shorter mount bolt!!
