Default ebay B&M short shifters

i just browsed ebay for b&m short shifters expecting to pay $70-$150 when i come across stuff like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...QrdZ1

now why in the hell would they be selling those for $10, and plus theres like 30 of them of the same thing just for different cars all going on right now

another thing... b&m has these shifters that have a little curve in the middle then go straight up, and others that are just straight with no curves, and the straight ones are like $80 more, i would like to know the differences between those, cuz im thinking about buying a B&m shifter soon, and im going to spend $100+ if i have to, to get a quality one that wont break within a month

thx for reading

B&M "style" short shifters. Gotta be careful of what you buy on e-bay, always read the item descriptions carefully.

Of all the things people on H-T seem to go for on ebay because it's cheap, the two things are: intakes and short shifters. I've talked to a few people and they all say to just get the cheap ****. I dunno, surely someone will show up that has one.

I've heard mixed reviews about them. Apparently they work fine and because of this some people love them, however i have heard horror storries about them breaking during vigorous shifting.

yes i have almost had one break on me(the ebay cheapie) i got the more expensive b&m with the new center sperical bearing section, it is uber smooth, cant even compare with a ebay shifter, not even in the same class, if you can afford the better one i think it cost me $120, if not the b&m regular steel s/s is good and wont break but probably isnt as smooth, if you can find an old B&M those were the best they had the bottom adjustable to allow for throw adjustment, they discontinued those but are proably the best if you can find one

Bottom line is you can buy one of those cheapo 10$ ebay shifters and if don't gorrila mash your shifts you will probably be ok. But i'd say like 8 out of 10 people who buy those cheapos have them snap or break on them.

What the expletive are these guys doing to break shifters? You don't need to jam the thing into gear with all your might. It's not a cement truck for christ's sake.

Actually that shifter might be cool,,Because the shifters that break ,(whether they be brand name or not) are the billet aluminum ones,,But that ebay ad says they're made out of Stainless steel..So I dont see anything wrong with that..

ya i have those ebay ones and honestly you can shift (if you have new bushings that came with the kit and all of the rods are tightened properly)...then you can shift like i do literally with one 2 fingers..

also you can install the shifter 2 ways...with the curved part going to the front or with the curve towards the back....personally i have the curve to the front and it works insanely wicked for me as I sit a little closer to the steering wheel then normal.

also i shift fast but never have to hammer the shifter as it is not needed and i have very quick shifts...I am not sure how people break their shifter rods except it could be a bad seating position combined with how the shifter is installed(curve front or back)...although it might look funny with the curve to the front or either...just try it to see which is best

First of all, the real deal B&M shifter (which is really nice) can be had for about $40, so spend the extra few bucks and get the right thing (the spherical bearing one is more). It works for a B16 too, you will notice the p/n is the same for civic and integra, 88-00. I used to be all about the cheap stuff but someone pointed out to me that it's better to get the real name brand parts, even for simple things, because most of those companies actually support motorsports, and they spent a lot of time researching to make the products that are copied and sold on ebay for a fraction of the price.
People do break the aluminum cheap ones all the time, because they they think with their $10 ebay shifter they are driving a top-fuel dragster EF, and they slam it into gear without clutching right and break it. If you can't part with $20 extra for a quality part you obviously aren't that invested, you're probably just sick of the UPS-truck EF shifter. Go to sears and get a die set or a couple of dies and cut your stock shifter down and rethread it. I did this just because I didn't like the shift height and I saw my friend do it with his accord, it looks nicer and 5th gear won't hit your passenger's knee. You can take about 5cm off the stock shifter. If you want pics or a write up pm me.

ya thats true...screwed up sincros or other issues with the shifting mechanism increase the resistance to the shifter(lol...not putting the clutch in all the way)....so when they are shifting very fast and this occurs...i could understand how your hammer force and the resistance to the motion of the shifter rods..would snap the little aluminum...its not a huge thick b&m hammer shifter..lol

yeah, if you do get a shifter off ebay, get a stainless steel one. I got a dual bend SS shifter from ebay for about $20. I matched it up to the B&M, and I swear I couldn't tell any difference. the tag that came with the shifter said it was apex-i.

and as far as cool air intakes, the ebay ones work pretty darn good, as long as you don't need the CARB sticker that says its smog legal in california. Although mounting hardware differs from kit to kit, so you have to look at that too.

just thought of something.... even if i could shift gears faster with this short shifter, i still probly wont notice a difference because of my almighty 4 speed manual 70 hp dpfi d15b... so i was just thinking to save that extra $100 and add it onto my get a b16 fund

my experience with the cheap shifters is that they all contain cheap ball bearing which may sound good but 2-3mm from the exhaust they overheat and break, and shifter goes to crap, also where mine almost broke is where you would push the shifter for 5th, is kinda hard to slam it into 5th, im not racing at 120mph here, but with 6 months of normal shifting into 5th it rubbed a little each time and when i took the shifter out it was worn about 3/4 through!! about to break, it was just a bad design and no research and development, the throw wasnt proper and resulted in contact with the shifter housing, the b&m does not do this
