one makes more power than the other, and one is lighter than the other

the whole point of a 4-2-1 header is to split the exhaust pulses that are in succession, so basically there is an exhaust pulse every 180 degrees, and if you pair 1 and 4, those cylinders fire 360 apart, so pairing 1 and 4 will share the same secondary and 2 and 3 will share the other secondary.

but then you have odd paired like dtr where they are sequential, pairing 1 and 3, 2 and 4. you can usually get away with a bigger collector throat with this configuration or pairing 1 and 2 as well, because you don't want to "crowd" the collector.

this is the best way i can explain it, so if someone can correct me, that would be cool.

doesn't really help the way you asked it either, there are about as many different headers out there as baskin robin ice cream flavors

k sorry lets see if this will help both of us.

2pc. 4-2-1 VS. 1pc. 4-2-1 header
and
4-1 VS. 4-2-1 header

after reading it again i sorta understood the answer but i wanna see if anyone else could explain it also. if that even made any sence. thanks

^ you are not going to get a simple answer. Everyone has their own views, RMF loves 4-1, others like 4-2-1s... A 4-1 normally has a narrower sweet spot, since a 4-2-1 steps up more... it bumps up size at each collector. Which is better nobody can say, I'm going to build a tri Y header though just for ground clearance.

And in most cases making a header 2 piece is to make installation easy. a one piece is lighter obviously.

the general rule of thumb is, 4-1 more for highend, 4-2-1 more for midrange. but that is a very very generalization because there are 421 headers out there that will out perform a 4-1 header in the high end, and vise versa.

there is no golden header that will give you X horsepower gain. it's really about having a header that is properly designed to work with your motor setup.

my header that gains me 10hp over a stock one, can easily make you lose 10hp vs a stock one on your motor, etc.

if you want an idea of what header will do what on your motor, search for people with a similar setup, and find dyno charts on what they are using.

and 1pc vs 2pc, is only for easy of installation mainly. and of course the 1pc will weigh less becuase of less flanges etc. thats about all
