5w-30 vs 10w-30
i know this topic has been posted before but i still havent gotten the right/valid answer.
anyways, in a place like chicago, which oil wieght would be good for '00 ITR?
i heard that the less the oil weight, the better the performance (5w-30) but too thin for summer..?
but while 10w-30 will work better (pull betteR) in VTEC..
what do you think?

Remember just because there is W in front of the first # doesn't mean thats the only weight #. Both #'s are important. If I where you I go with 5w-40
First weight # tells you the oil will get no thinner then 5. The last # tells you, your oil will get no thinner then 30-40 once op. temps have been reached at 100 deg. Cel.

for sure im not spending my money with Synthetic since i will be changing my oil every 2k miles anyways....
so, Racer X, are you using 5w-40 in your ITR?
have you had experienced with both?
with my B16 integra, i used to put 5w-30 in there and VTEC kicks in "OK"....but when i put 10w-30, i felt a lil hp loss at low end, but VTEC engages pretty nice---i dunno if im halucinating or not

Since your in Chicago, I would suggest using 5w30 since it gets colder there. Also, since your changing your oil every 2k miles synthetic would be a waste of money.
When I track my car this what I use. Remember recommended in Japan and European Honda Dealerships is 5w40.
10w30-40 normally should only be used in extreme cold weather where it stays around 0 or sub zero temps.
But Syn. for you would be waste of money if you change every 2k. Also why do you change so often? Reg pet. engine oil will last up to 3-4K on normal depending on additives and chemical make ups.
Normally only seen 10w40 used in Boxer engines of Sti WRX's and on FIA rally cars when they where in Sweden. It was either 10w40-50.

10w-30 should not be used in the winter.
5w40 is crap and should not be used.
The first number is what weight the oil acts like when cold. The lower the number, the faster it will start to move when you start your car. DO NOT USE 0 weight though.
The second number is how it acts when warm.
This magical process is obtained by using aditives inthe oil. Thus the bigger the spread between the 2 numbers, the more aditives, and less oil you have.
I use 5w30 year round as recommend by the Acura engineers(owners manual).

There's a lot of confusion going on in this thread. Let me try to add to the chaos.
If you are tracking your car, I highly suggest using synthetic oil. I know someone w/ an ITR that has seen sump temps of almost 300F after 30 minutes on track in high heat. YIKES! As for weight, just be reasonable. 5W-30 and 10W-30 are going to be fine unless you are in insanely cold weather, where you would want to use synthetic 5W-30.

BMW use 10W-60 for the M5!!! Normally they use 5W-40
I use these: Honda Gold Ultra Synthetic 5W-40

"Multi viscosity oils are one of the great improvements in oils, but they should be chosen wisely. Always use a multi grade with the narrowest span of viscosity that is appropriate for the temperatures you are going to encounter. "

Not that it matters much, but I'm from Chicago and use 5w30 during the fall, winter, and spring months. In the summer when I am tracking the car, I use 10w30. It is always best to use oil with the least spread between "cold" and "hot" ratings.
I use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil exclusively but a standard oil should be fine as well, especially if you change it often. If you start tracking the car often switching to a synthetic may provide some additional insurance.

Huh? I mean full synthetic oil, just what I said. The disadvantage of too much additives doesn't apply to full synthetic oil they said!!!

Either way, the bigger the spread, the worse it is. The only way to completely get around this is to run a single weight, but then you're going to starve you engine of oil when its cold which would be stupid.
Well, I think synthetic oils don't need "additives". They are manufactured to comply with the 5W-40 spec from scratch, hence the word "synthetic"......
