Default Crazy Speedo/Tach/Odometer, part deux

Ok my speedo/tach is going insane. Randomly the needles will go all over the place and then stop on 0 (both speedo and tach). car still runs fine, but speedo and tach read at 0. Also when this happens the water temp gauge reads abnormally low AND the tripodometer/odometer does not increase/work while the needles are goin crazy

Then out of nowhere they come back, both needles work, so does trip/odometer, and the water temp goes back to normal....

HELP

would that cause the odometer to stop counting?

There is no bogging/stuttering as is common with a bad ignitor....

check the 10mm ground bolt on the waterneck. if its not tight gauges tend to go a little crazy.

just did some reading and some serching, not in that order tho

anyway i think it might be the cluster itself.. if it were VSS i would be getting a CEL, and my dizzy is < 6months old.

Cluster is original, has 246k miles on it, think its time has come?

its the vss. i had very similar symptoms. you wouldnt necessarily code if its still sending voltagefrom my experience, meaning your speedo is goin nuts but still working.

no when it goes nuts its goes nuts then drops to zero (no voltage) stays there for quite sometime, today it and the tach both stayed at 0 for a good 5minutes while i was going at least 80mph @3.8k rpms.

So if the CL runs off lack of voltage and it was indeed the VSS i shoulda popped a CEL somepoint in those 5 minutes right?

Also how does that explain the weird low water temp when the guages are flipping out?

the fuse is in the box under the dash. IIRC it is in the middle row 7th slot from the left. it will be the ALT/VSS Fuse

is there anyone here with a fuse box lid who can confirm this?

also you might think about going to an Auto Zone or O'Reillys and having your alternator checked. it is free at most places. but if you think it is a cluster the swap out with a friend, it is only like a two minute removal/replace

ok i think i might have the wrong insert in the fuse panel cause it shows no vss/alt AT ALL.

The code on it is SR3-A0 "F" - is this the right breakout for a eg/ej?

Here is the row by row:

Row 1:
- Spare Fuse(10A)
- BLANK
- 7.5A RR Def Rly, Heater Motor Rly, Cooling Fan Motor Rly
- 20A Wiper Washer
- 10A Backup Light
- BLANK
- BLANK
- 7.5A Starter Signal
- 10A Tail Ligh/Instr. Light/License Light
- BLANK
- 10A R Low Beam
- 10A L Low Beam
- 15A Radio/ Cig
- Spare Fuse 20A

Row Two:
- Spare Fuse 7.5A
- 30A Sunroof
- BLANK
- 7.5A Interior Light
- 20A RR R Power Win
- 20A FR L Power Win
- 20A Power Locks
- 20A RR L Power Win
- 20A FR R Power Win
- BLANK
- 10A R Highbeam
- 10A L Highbeam
- BLANK

--------------

No Vss/alt anywhere, only 2 rows....

HELP

Though I never had trouble with the water temp or tach, my speedo and odometer would go crazy sometimes, other times not work at all and so on so I changed my vss and it didn't help a bit...finally as a last resort I got a different cluster and voila all fixed. Just my two cents. Happy holidays!

Double check ALL grounds, engine and find which wires on your cluster are grounded...and then from there a Helms, wiring diagram & DVOM are your friend.

Or you can just try to replace parts...
