Default Timing Belt Issue.

I'm getting close to 180k on my original engine D15B2. I not sure If I can change it solo, I dont even have all the tool or the space. Plus once again im broke. I'm at 177k and the belt was changed at 89k before, show from the exact records. Will the belt break instantly at 180k. Eventually I'd get the same engine if it goes, but I'm just wondering how much time I have.

Open the cover and check and see the condition.

Hmm, I've never done that before.. Might have to check chiltons for the info, what should I be looking for? Typical wear and tear? I have a 90 DX sedan btw. I didnt know you could check the belt without dropping the motor mount.

take off the cover, look to see if the teeth are still round, or if the edge is starting to wear. check all the teeth. and look for cracks or frays.

if you are looking at the belt on the back of the motor side (right) where the belt travel direction is up and the teeth are pointing in, the wear will be on the bottom of the tooth.

basically, it wears on the opposite side of the tooth than the direction of the belt.

^Hmm sorry im not getting that completely about the wear direction. I'm actually thinking about doing the timing belt myself since I have 177k anyway on the engine. Not sure if its a good idea though.

teeth always point in when you are looking at the belt (its a circle, with teeth on the inside)

since it is a circle, and is moving around that circle, it is going up on the right, left on the top, down on the left, and right on the bottom.

normal tooth wear happens on the side of the tooth opposite belt direction (that is the part being pushed by the gear)

if the belt is going up (right side) wear is on the bottom of the tooth.

I have a Chilton's and like 120 bucks in my account. How difficult is replacing the timing belt. I replaced my radiator awhile back, so I'm not a total noob but on a scale from 1-10?
