5th Gear Pops to Neutral Sporadicly... 98 jdm itr tranny... rebuild in md/dc/va area?
(98 jdm itr tranny) Here's what happens. It does it enough where I'm starting to see a pattern now...
Usually, it happens when I first start to drive the car. On normal road speeds where I'm in 5th gear going about 40mph, its fine...
But when I first get on a highway or interstate and go into 5th gear and try to accelorate, sometimes it will pop out and go to neutral. It does not make a sound... I'll slightly increase throttle then suddenly, I notice the car start to just rev, so I clutch and go back to 5th, then its fine. It has NEVER happened more than once in 5th gear. So it might pop out in 5th gear, then I clutch and put it back in 5th, and its good for the rest of the trip.
And its random... Some days it's fine... Some days it may happen 1 time during the daily trips of varied speeds, but it seems to only happen in 5th gear and under mild+ acceloration.
The only time this pattern was broken is once, in a 5th gear around 7.5k rpm's, it just popped out.
Other than this problem, I'm having no other problems. If anyone can help, that would be great.
I'm in the MD/DC/VA area as well, so if I need a tranny rebuild, can you please suggest a place? I would rather avoid shipping a transmission. I'd rather do this than start randomly buying tranny parts and replacing parts in hope of finding the faulty one.
I'll add that I'm a very responsible driver and over baby my car, so it's not beat on. But I'm the 3rd owner (including the guy in Japan who had this motor from the dealership), so who know's what was done before. The tranny is probably just ready for a rebuild?
All I can think is because of the final drive, I'm in 5th gear 90% of the time and the synchro is just worn maybe?
EDIT :: A place to buy a new or lightly used JDM ITR tranny works as well (I'll order from anywhere)

Contact sgt-racing.com he might have some spares to sell. If you want to rebuild, a friend of mine can do it. He's down in Fredericksburg.
Before jumping to any conclusions about the tranny, have you tried getting it looked at?
Also, I know this seems rather simple, but 5th gear sits highest in the tranny, and when you are low on fluid, this is the first gear that will start showing symptoms, ie popping out of gear, grinding...etc.

I heard this before and I tried to fill it up. But it was a while back... I'll check the levels and top it off to make sure though.
If not, I'll see what happnes next. If I still have the problem, I would love to do a rebuild, and I'll try that website mentioned above.
Thanks for the help guys.
If anybody know's more info that may help, I'm still listening...

CHeck the transmission fluid level.
I had the same problem wehn I had my GS-R (before I got my ITR), filled up the transmission with fluid and it was good to go.
You may want to check for signs of leakage while you're at it so you know if it's a reoccuring problem or not.

It sounds like the "synchro spring". It's squared off and not round. quite common when you have gears popping out. This is a very thin steel ring that fits over the actual synchro. It keeps the sleeve locked onto the gear/synchro.
