You have to remove the timing belt covers and **** to get to it. Also have to slide the timing belt off of the cam gear to remove it. It's basically doing a timing belt install. If you haven't replaced you timing belt yet, replace it while you're at it. The timing belt/water pump are usually replaced at the same time. It's a popular combo because you're already in there and have everything apart.

I wouldn't call it a "piece of cake" for someone who may have limited mechanical knowledge. If someone has to ask "where's the waterpump?" it won't be easy for them to do the timing belt and waterpump job.

BTW:

I'm not making fun of the guy asking about the waterpump for not knowing. Nobody was born with a wrench up his ***, and honestly even seasoned mechanics make mistakes when doing a timing belt and waterpump job in the form of having the mechanical crank/cam timing off a tooth or more.

I'll put it this way:

I had done 5-6 engine swaps with zero issues, but then I did a timing belt and waterpump job on a 1995 Civic DX I owned very briefly and even I got the timing off a tooth because you don't go by the marks, you have to line up two marks flat with the head's deck surface.

How much is the shop wanting to charge you to fix the waterpump problem?

My shop would usually charge around $415.00 to replace the timing belt, drivebelts, and waterpump with Genuine Honda parts, labor and tax - we'd strongly suggest having the cam and crank seals replaced while we were in there for just $60.00 more too because if they begin to leak you have to remove the timing belt AGAIN just to get to them.

Oh and lastly I'm aware that some people (such as 3 of my mechanics here at the shop) can do Civic timing belt jobs very easily. If left alone with all the necessary parts any one of them can knock the job out in about an hour and a half - that's great because the job pays 3.5 hours to do.
