Honda uses a special break-in oil for new engines. It comes in the engine when the car leaves the factory, and it's shipped with new engines. You should leave the break-in oil in the engine for the first 3000 miles.
After that, I've only used full synthetic oil (Mobil 1) with great results. Synthetic offers better flow characteristics when the engine is cold, and is less resistant to breakdown when the engine is hot.
Mobil 1 (the recommended 5W30 as well as 10W30) is currently selling for around $28 for a six-pack at Sam's Club and Costco.

Synthetic has much better properties and WILL allow your engine to last longer. I'm not saying you have to buy it, but I wont buy a car from you.

Honda only throws out those oils to make money for themselves, but if you buy a rebuilt engine from honda, I guess you've already wasted enough money in the first place anyway. The reason why engines can run for 3000 miles without an oil change for break-in is simply because they now build these engines in contamination free areas. When you build an engine yourself, you need to change the oil often to make sure you have all the dirt and contaminants out. There's no special oil that will do this for you.

I'm sorry but what? How the oil doesn't burn completely? Oil not supposed to burn buddy.
I'm very religious about oil. Here's why, this is my Mustangs head after pulling the valve cover for the first time in 6 years/70k miles, running Nitrous for two years and a turbo for one and flogging the **** out of it. I wish I could say this is what my Honda head looked like when I pulled its valve cover when I first bought it with 90k miles on it. But then again, almost everybody takes oil way too lightly.

Yup. And synthetic oil is more resistant to burning than conventional oil.

i think he is saying that the oil that does get burnt at high RPM's in the combustion chamber doesnt burn off completely and leaves more build up on the pistons with synthetic, thats why rotary guys arent supposed to run synthetic since the rotary motor injects a small amount of oil on purpose

GTX 10w30 used the synthetic didnt like the results burned way to much i was adding oil every 2 weeks back to the gtx not a problem at all. my head still looks like it has under 100k on it from using 5w30 in NY to 10w30 gtx in florida.
im thinking u are thinking way too hard on this. synthetic oil vs. dino oil.
blah blah blah. just change it every 3k and ur good to go.
dont matter which oil u use. just as long as u change it often.
i mean, would u want syntheic leather or real leather on ur car? Real leather, cuz it feels better.
synthetic oil is over rated. its the only overHYPED synthetic product and over priced.
Its basically made from veggie oil. haha.

this is the head in my 93 ls engine with about 176k miles. the head was cleaned at about 100k miles becuase the previous owner burn the exhaust valves in cylinder 3.

i use castrol gtx....its just a oil i choose to run because its what ive been basically running since i got the car(4years). ive ran synthetic and the syn-blend. they all burn including the gtx, but this was due to the previous owner skimping out on the good work and when they hot tanked the had they left the valve seals on and just reinstalled the valve into the head. basically when i removed the seal to replace them....they were in peices.
on my new engine build i might run synthetic or synthetic blend
