any gs-r motor is a decent swap, try and get one after 1995 so you dont have to worry about the obdII-obdI conversion

gs-r's are very good for those cars. my advice if you want to be quick and reliable go with a gs-r or a ls/vtec setup and fine tune it then, trim off some body fat and your good to go.

well you have a d16y8, whats the mileage? .. is it in bad condition? .. the best engine is what you can afford .. i would say K20a would prolly be the best or a jdm b18c.. and whats your power goals? NA or FI .. read this https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=878010 .. and do some searching .. otherwise youll be flamed, read the rules .. imo boost the D .. with the price of a swap you can easliy piece together a turbo kit ..

this has been covered a million times.. try searching its there believe me ..

Before anyone tells him what year engine he should get we should find out what state he lives in. Cause if he wants it to be legal and lives in Cali, it's gonna have to be a 99 or newer engine.

For someone that has just got into honda's I would say a b18c1 would be a good swap. You could sacrafice a bit of torque but save some money and go with a b16a2 or something in that family. I don't suggest you dive right into a k20 swap cause it's one the harder side of the scale.

you could do a h22, but the b series motors are more popular now-a-days, and theres more of a market for them

sohcforlife, you said the motor has to be at least the same model year as the car or it's not legal? Then I'm screwed. I do live in cali and have a b18c in a 2000 car. Am I completely f***ed?

i live in cali, you motor has to be the same year (obd) as your car. If not, just dont do anything stupid to attract cops attention. Is your car noticeably modified. If a cop pulled you over and popped your hood, then your screwed.

Alright...update on my situation. Went to the smog referee, he said that if my 8 yr/80,000 mi emissions warrantee is voided by the swap (which it probably is), then I have to put a B16A2 back in there to make it stock, or sell it out of state. I'm gonna try to spend a little less than that...convert back to OBD II and just get the thing smogged (hoping the smogger doesnt notice the engine).

thats a lie. look at the thread in the faq links, they weigh the motors against eachother. more like 35-55 pounds
