The homemade beast
Some of you may be familiar with a crate motor made by Mr. Gasket known as "The Beast". I was looking at the stats (270 hp right out of the crate)and it looks like a masterpiece. Then, I looked at the price... $10k. So the I thought to myself that buying this motor would not only be expensive, but also taking the easy way out which is a concept that I don't really like anyway. So I was thinking about building a motor inspired by the beast.
It starts with a B18 block and on top is a ported and polished GSR head. In the block goes a lightweight crankshaft, perfectly balanced rods, and pistons that acheive a compression ratio of 11.9:1. It is also bored from the stock 81mm to 84.5mm. In the head is a set of high performance cam gears.
The only difference would be that my beast would be built out of mostly used, rebuilt parts, and some high performance parts. I'll admit that to get a good start, a few corners will be cut. Such as the custom cranshaft and rods (the most expensive parts) but I figured the cost of building this motor would be around $2k after looking up the prices of all components from various sources.
However I have encountered a small problem. I can't find any pistons that fit a bore of 84.5 mm, nor can I find any info on how to expand the cylinder bore and how much it would cost to do that. Does anyone know about that stuff?

I'm guessing it wouldn't be recommended for me to try to expand the bore myself, since the first post I received reccomends me to see a seasoned professional. How much money should I expect to spend on having the bore expanded to the specs in my first post

well, I guess it all depends on what year Accord he has. Isn't it the 3g's that have an A series motor or something and are quite light? I'm sure I've heard of a few B series in those year Accords.
Now if the OP is refering to putting a B series into a 90+ then thats a bad choice. Not only does the B series not have enough torque to move the heavy Accord chassis of those years but no one makes mounts for that motor into that chassis. Then you would also have to figure out how to mount up the shifter and shift and linkage since the B series motors have rod style shift linkage and the 90+ Accords have cable style shift linkage.

Go read some more.
Go read some more.
"b series motors don't belong in accords."
And why the f*ck not? An Intrgra GSR weighs about the same as a 3rd gen accord. Open your mind, along with a couple of shop manuals.
"can u gimme a link to 'the beast' i heard about it awhile ago and saw a few ads but never really saw it again after that, no maagzine reviews or nothing, im interested and wunna kno more..."
I lost the Link to the site. Try typing in: "the beast" crate motor by Mr. Gasket
"agreed, do they even make mount for it? a while back a guy i knew was looking into it and was gonna get a hasport one but they did have it"
I was reading an article on this issue actually. It's not very hard to fabricate your engine mounts. If an H22A can fit in a CRX, then dammit a b18 motor can and will fit in my accord.
"its more an issue of torque I believe. A light *** civic is a far cry from an accord..."
Again, were not talking about a dinky little civic 1.6L... this is a GSR in a nutshell. That's right, a B18C1 1.8L which is only .2L smaller than the current A20A1. They have very close numbers in displacement (1955cc v. 1995cc or something like that) close engine weight (actually the GSR it just a hair lighter) and close base model body weight (the Accord is slightly heavier)
"you would also have to figure out how to mount up the shifter and shift and linkage since the B series motors have rod style shift linkage and the 90+ Accords have cable style shift linkage."
This problem surfaced in the H22/CRX swap. The shift likage was converted from cable to hydraulic. Not a problem.
"Why is there a post about a built B series in the Accord Forum???"
Because one is going into my accord. now shut the f*ck up and accept it and only post again if you have something helpful to say. I still don't have an answer to where I can find pistons of the above compression (or close to it) and size

blah blah blah
the damn thing doesnt make enough torque to be an IMPROVEMENT that is WORTHWHILE unless it is in a 3rd gen hatchback, or MAYBE coupe.
270whp all motor in a 3rd gen hatch would honestly make me spoolge my pants

Your thinking of the clutch line being converted from cable to hydrolic. I'm refering to the shift linkage. In an H22/CRX the rod linkage was removed and replaced with the cable linkage from the Prelude. To do it in reverse, meaning putting a rod linkage into a cable linkage chassis is going to be more difficult. Like putting a B series into a 95 Accord that normally has cable shifter linkage.
Now, in a 3rd Gen Accord, I do believe the shifter linkage is a rod style linkage. So it would most likely not be that hard to adapter the B series shifter linkage to that chassis.
I hope that makes sence. I'm not saying your going to have to make custom mounts for the shifter assmebly in a 3rd Gen Accord because I really don't know much about 3rd gen Accords, I'm saying it would have to be custom in a 90+ Accord because those years came with a different style shifter linkage.
Also, for future reference. You may want to list what year and model Accord you are refering to in your orginal post. There aren't to many people on here with 3rd gen Accords so when someone refers to there car most people will assume they have a 90+ Accord. And in this case since the B series isn't the a real good option for the 90+ Accords, people don't usually respond well. So next time, list what year and model you have so others can better help you with your questions.

for in a 5th gen, I would have to disagree.
Your F22B2 puts out 130hp and 139tq stock. A stock B18B1 puts out 142hp and 127tq. Now if you build up a B series to the 270hp mark, yes you'll probably have more torque than your stock motor, but the money you will have spent building the motor and mounting it into the car, IMO, is not worth it. You could easily buy an H22, build it a bit and swap it in for probably less than you would spend on the B series swap. Now with just a little build on the H may not get you to 270hp, I'm pretty sure you'll have more torque than the built B series. So I don't think the B series swap is a wise swap into any Accord other than the 3rd gen's.
Also, their was a comparison between H series motors and B series motors weight. It was determind that the H series does weigh more than the B series but it wasn't by much. I don't remember the actual figures but it wasn't a great deal. No your F series is going to weigh less than the H series because of it's SOHC head in comparison to the H series DOHC head. So I don't think the difference in weight between an F series and B series is going to be much at all.

another thing to think about:
though a b18 might even make MORE torque than the f22b2, its all about useable torque. its no good if you have to rev to 6000 rpm just to make torque. another thing is: why spend thousands on a motor that BARELY makes more torque than the STOCK motor.
people will so..OHH, the b18 or b16 or whatever makes _____ troque, and thats only 5 ft/lbs less than the f22, so whats teh big deal? the big deal is you are spending THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS for a motor that wont be ANY improvement over the stock motor

This just proves my point even more. The current motor in my Acoord produces 109 ft-lb of tourque which is sufficient to spin the tires some at full throttle from a full stop. The GSR motor produces somewhere around 135 ft-lb of torrque bone stock. "The Beast" makes 220 ft-lb of tourque. With the mods I make which will be similar I figure I can get somewhere inbetween those 2 figures (say 180- 190 ft-lb). Hmmmm.... Sounds worth it to me.

If you know how to drive, any tourque is "useable". Just shift to a lower gear... Dumbass

A B18 and a B16 are very different due to their displacement. They are built similarly but a B16 goes well in a light car like a del sol, crx, civic hatch, etc. Whereas the B18 goes better in a mid- wieght car like an integra, civic sedan, or for example a 3rd gen accord like mine.

alright you cocky little ****, it's lesson time...
lesson 1)
if you want help on this forum, watch your tone...you are a newbie, and thus you don't come on a web forum telling people to shut the expletive up, bla bla bla...there are thousands upon thousands of cocky ***** that have come through this website, and the trend seems to be that none of them get the info they are looking for after they get cocky...if you want info, try being nice...otherwise, the more knowledgeable of us will most likely disregard your posts...
lesson 2)
as previously stated, it helps if you post your vehicle make/model/year, etc in the original post...this keeps people from having to guess as to which particular accord you are talking about...hell, for all we knew from the first post, you wanted to swap a b18 "beast" (kind of an oxymoron if you ask me) into a 2003 accord...sure, we can ask, but why not just take the easy route and post the info of your car in the first post, thus minimizing the time and effort it takes for someone to help you with your particular problem...
lesson 3)
don't talk **** about the administrators of this site...trust me, not a good idea, especially when you are all of a week old on this website...it'd be a good way to get banned...again, if you want the info you seek, try being nice and getting along with others...it'll make your stay much more pleasant here at honda-tech....

i just don't get it, if you are so firm about the idea, why you even want to spend time to converts everyone here? so we can hump your leg or something?
do it and come back with some numbers, so we all can shut up and saying how dumb we were.
Oh yeah, i think it's pretty pointless too, almost forgot to add that too..

Anyone ever heard of known as say something helpful or keep it to yourelf? People kept telling me "B- series motors dont belong in accords" and useless garbage of the like. That's an opinion... it doesn't help me. So why say it?
To me it's a form of disrespect, and after three useless posts I got pissed. I don't mean to disrespect anyone who didn't bring it upon themselves.
What's with this "trial user" bullshit? Why is there a heirarchy on a damn message board? Just because I'm new to this board doesn't mean that every time someone opens the hood of a car I say something like "wow... there's alot of stuff under here" It just means I hadn't been referred here yet. I know Hondas as well as people on this site that have been here a long time.
That just goes to show you that the new guy isn't always as clueless one always thinks.

people said that b series dont belong in accords because you didnt specify you had a 3rd gen accord and the majority of the posters in this forum have 4th, 5th, and 6th gen accords. now shut the expletive up and listen to your own words... "say something helpful or keep it to yourelf?"
y not just build a h22, more torque and hp. prolly end up costing less to get u over 270hp. plus simple drop in. no need to mess with the shift linkages or anything. just my opinion.
