Hi I hope somebody can help me with this, I just bought a 1998 Honda Accord and the wheel goes "click click click click click click" on turns and even more on sharp turns. Thanks for your help in advance.

you got a noisy cv joint , replace the axle on the side that is noisy,,,

 

Yup, 99.99% sure it's an axle. Mine did the same thing when the cv boot tore.

 

How critical is this clicking noise? do you think that I should replace the axle that's making noise right away or can it wait.

 

Mine was clicking for a few months, but I think I was lucky. I'd get it replaced asap. It is relatively inexpensive....$70 for an axle and maybe an hour of labor if you can't replace it yourself.

 

I'm a pretty good shade tree mechanic but this is my first Honda and my first front wheel drive car, is it pretty easy to replace the axle?

If you're asking about how urgent it is that you get this replaced, then consider this. When it does finally snap, you will be stranded with a car that runs fine yet won't move. It's actually very aggravating. Hopefully it won't fail you at a time you need it the most, possibly pulling out into traffic when it snaps under the acceleration during your turn. Consider the clicking your warning light. Time to get that baby replaced.

 

Bad CV joint, replace same.

 

Yeah you definatly have a bad cv joint.Look under the car and see if any of the rubber boots are torn or if the clamps have came of them.thats usaully the easiest way to tell wich one it is and replace it.

In general you have a couple of thousand miles before the cv joint self destrusts. It is possible that when it self destructs it will cause your steering geometry to radically change, making it hard to keep the car going where you want.

 

Matt when the joint shells itself the car won't move any further; the honda doesn't have a positrac diff.
As far as guessing how far it will go, it's just that a guess; I've seen them go 500 miles and had one lady didn't make it 50 miles to her home.

 

the click sounds must from the cv joint, the cv boot might have been rip open, get it change asap

 

I believe matt_in_sd's speaking of how long the joint will last before it does break. In any case, I'd much rather get it BEFORE it gets me!

Just from experience, the car WILL NOT move once the joint breaks. The now free spinning nub of an axle will take all the power as hondadude said because of the differential. It will be like sitting in neutral, only with alot of clicking and grinding to keep you company until the tow truck arrives.

 

I figure I'd sit back and wait for the "Speak from experience" line b4 I chimed in. LOL

Replacing the axle isn't too bad, but it takes some time and patience. I have neither and took mine in to a local garage to have it done.

From what I understand the driver's side tends to go first for some reason, not sure if this is just limited to Honda's or not. Anyone? Also, if you are going to be under there doing it, look at the other axle as well and see if it will need to be replaced in the near future as well. Good luck!

bad axles, usually the outside cv joint goes out and start clicking. if axles are ok.
then sometimes aftermarket wheels specially 17"and bigger wheels make a clicking
noise.

 

Thanks for all your help guys, I will have it replaced this week, until then the car will sit in the garage, I was thinking of doing it myself but I hate working on cars when it's cold outside, it sucks when you hit your knuckles. I know that some of you guys up north think that 55 degrees is hot but in Texas that's cold.

I was once driving a car (not a Honda) when the cv (constant velocity) joint broke. Yep, the engine would rev up and everything, but the car wouldn't move. It's something that will happen, the only question is when. Glad to hear you're going to get it fixed.

 

Granted if the shaft wears down to the point it can not engage the hub then you wont go anywhere. But in my case I had a '82 civic and I kept putting off changing the shaft. In the middle of a sharp turn at a good clip and the cv joint started disintegrating. As it grenaded it pushed the wheel out which in turn created a severe toe out condition. By ther time the car stopped the steering was back to normal.
