Default 95 Accord EX BLOWN ENGINE

Well it looks like my engine went out. I took it to the HONDA dealership and they said I have zero compresion in one of my cylinders. They estimated $2500 for a replacement used motor or $3500 to rebuild my current one. I am currently a college student so i don't have a lot of extra capital. I know dealerships are high but what would you guys suggest. I also have a friend who is a Ceterified Honda mechanic who can possibly to the work on the side for a little less.

1.) Get a new car for around $3000
2.) Drop a new motor in it (maybe a H22)
3.) Rebuild

Will a H22 drop in with the F22 Vtec trans and ECU

THX

holy hell that's expensive.

you can get a whole replacement motor from a salvage yard for $300.

http://www.car-part.com

the F22 trans will bolt up to an H22, yes, but you'll need a different ECU.

I concur, those quotes are nuts!! You could get a good used engine for 3-5 hundred bucks.....just need to rent a hoist if you don't have one. Call up a buddy for some help for a weekend swap.

an h22 will drop right in. you can use the f22 tranny. but I would use the p13 (h22 ecu) for best results for the ecu.

yep, those eastimates sound about right.

When I bought my 95 Accord EX like 4.5 yrs ago, the person I bought it from had just had a used motor installed at a dealer. He had receipts and everything and the cost for him when they did it was $2800.

If you were planning on swapping the motor, then now is the time if you can afford it. Otherwise just buy a F22(whatever you have now) from a junkyard and have a friend or someone help you install it. And just run the F22 until you can afford the swap you want.

nope, not to my knowledge. They buy a used motor and swap it in.

Probably buying it from some junkyard that they usually deal with for this sort of stuff but most likely it's just like a motor that you would buy from most any junkyard.

Most of that cost is labor. I remember going to a local dealership where I live and I was speaking with a guy in the shop. I've been in the parts office so much that I've gotten to know a few people there. I had a problem and they were happy to print some stuff out for me and help me out for free. So I was talking to the guy and he was telling me about this Prelude that was sitting across the shop. The owner had swapped motors, the car starts fine but as soon as he releases the ebrake, the car cuts off. The owner couldn't find it and they had 5 hrs into it with no luck. He said it's probably a grounding issue but they haven't found it yet and they charge something like 80 or so per hour with a 2 hrs minimum charge. At that rate your bill can shoot up real fast.

So take the cost of the motor, mark it up a bit and add in the labor fees and there you go.

I'll go to the dealer to buy parts, but there isn't much I would have a dealer do to my car unless I'm having major problems that I can't figure out. No offence to anyone that works for a dealership.

christ I should start my own motor-swapping business.

I'd do it for the price of parts & fluids, then add $500 cash and a 30 pack for labor. It's not that hard.

labor for an H22 swap will be more $$ than a direct F --> F swap, not to mention an H22 goes for a LOT more than a $300 F22. not sure what you mean by that.

I got a buddy who's a Honda mechanic so he can do it if he has the time. My current motor is a vtec so the difference in cost won't be too much more. I just need to find a good deal on the motor.

Like everyone has said if your looking for the cheapest way get a new F22 and swap it in. You won't have to mess with any wiring issues and no need to go to the exhaust shop.

If your looking for just an H22 you're most likely going to have to buy the exhaust manifold or a header then have the exhuast welded up. Do some minor wiring and find a place to purchase an ecu. Most places when selling just an engine don't include the down pipe on the exhaust manifold or ecu. Your probably looking at around $2000 at a minimum for the swap.

With the F22 your looking at less than $1000 easy.

Well I have two 90-91 Accords already that I can pull the motors out of if I need to. I was just trying to see if there is any way I can take advantage of my misfortune by dropping a bigger motor in. The cheapest I have found is $1500 without the tranny. Any know of a good site.

It's not the 30 count beer that bothers me, it's the extra pieces afterward that concerns me......

LOL - an H22 isn't bigger than an F22

You should try calling around locally, I got mine through a local dealer for $1000 with a 90 day warranty. Not much of a warranty but at least I knew it was covered if anything happened. Just my .02

Am I the only one that thinks it could be a burnt out valve? Unless you got like major grinding going on you probably don't have to swap out more than a valve. In my case I had real weak compression at least on a burnt out valve but you never know.

Come on folks don't be encouraging to swap if we don't know for sure that's the problem! With that much money on the line you really gonna take them on their word? Find out what the hell is wrong first!

The only way he is gonna know for sure is to take the head and pan off of the motor and visually inspect it. While you can do this in the car, it is way easier to take it out and do it and if you are going that far, I would rebuild it anyways...
