skunk2 stage 2 cams on a stock block b16 ?
hey guys
ive been searching over and over. i do see that the CTR/ITR cams are a good choice to drop into a stock block b16. i also see that the buddy club 3+ cams are a good choice.
i just acquired the skunk2 stage 2 cams for a deal. was wondering if it would be worthwhile to have those put in or would they need a lot of tuning to make power. i basically want to feel a difference w/o having to take it to a tuner.
pretty much just want to drop in some nice cams, w/ upgraded valvesprings/retainers and go out for a ride and feel a nice improvement.
what do you guys think? keep the skunk2 stage 2 cams or sell and get something else?
Current mods are pretty much stock b16 w/ Intake, Header, Exhaust.

i have the stage 2's but with 11:1 compression...if youre gonna stay stock compression i would sell them.

The skunk stg 2 cam is a nice cam but many feel you need more comp to run them
However you can still make quite a bit of power with them even on stock compression
I have seen US B16's make 20+whp with cam swaps and I dont see why you wouldnt feel that much of a power increase
Get it tuned and clay the motor --- piston to valve clearance will be tight and its best to make sure you have the proper clearance before running a cam like that
Friend of mine ran JUN 3's on what he thought was a stock B16 ----- after mangling all his valves and breaking a few pistons he discovered the head had been milled by the previous owner ---- an expensive mistake to say the least
After the fix the motor made a solid 167-170whp from a baseline of 139-140whp --- the cams did their job and the owner was happy with the power increase as well

are u planning on getting an ecu at all and get a chip atleast? or just drop the cams in and call it a day? either way, with any kind of cam changes, ctr/itr or whatever it is, you're gonna need to tune it. you're a/f ratio won't be the same.
without tuning, u should stay w. ITR cams, cause I make 184whp on sk2 stage2 cams on stock b16 block tuned, before tuning it dynoed 147whp.l.
Damn, those are nice numbers for a 1.6. I made 180/130 on a stock GSR w/Skunk2 Stage 2's. Even 10.1 compression can make power

how much further do you want to go with this setup...??
if you've got these for a good price, (depending on your $$ situation) i'd wait a bit longer maybe get some CTR pistons or "other", then get it all done, tuned, you will be so much happier..
If you jst drop the cams in now... you might be happy.. BUT guaranteed you will be happier if you wait and do some compression work and a good tune..
to make the most of those cams..!

theres a dude on here i forgot his username, but he had a stock comp b16 and actually made less power with the stage 2's compared to the stock cams.

Yup, bone stock head.
Yup, bone stock head.
sk2 stg2 in a b16 untuned is kinda a waste off time....UNLESS u get it tuned..... i ran my b16 a while back with sk2 stg2 cams untuned a best time off 15.01 at 92mph
then went back to run my car again with stock b16 cams a best time off 14.1 at 94 mph but only this time i ran it with some MH DRAG Slicks.... i think the skunk2 stg2 would of got the same times only even with drag slicks untuned......
so if u wanna feel power get it tuned as soon as possible.....
more upgrades+no tuning=no power

First off his numbers were from bubba (low readings Desert location)
Second he is using 1.75" crimp bent exhaust
Just those two factors alone account for way a big cammed car made less hp when its choked up and breathing dirty exhuast back in the chamber
I will lay $1000 right now that says I make more power on Stage 2's over my stock cams
WIth a proper header and exhuat the cams will make at least 10whp if not more even on a mild setup --- dont fool yourself otherwise

@tommyz32
I've just installed TODA C2's into my b16 head. Block is stock. I have just upgraded the valvetrain and got head p&p. Now I'm gonna tune it with crome and rev up to 9k rpm.
Even without ecu tuning (using b16a2 base map) it's much quicker then on a stock cams. My CR is<11 (around 10.8) and it works just great.
