strange problem
on saturday, i replaced the timing belt and water pump in my 94 civic (1.5l sohc). started and ran great all night and the next day. that night, i went to start it, and it cranked very slowly (as if it were really cold), stumbled and stalled. i did not think much of this because it was cold out and i'm not sure how strong the battery is. i try to start it again - this time it cranked normally, but still stumbled and stalled. at this point, i think something is wrong with the timing belt, or at least, my install. i open the oil cap to look for cam/valve movement while a friend cranks the starter. the cam and valves appear to be functioning normally, so i decide to make it start by flooring the throttle and cranking it. this worked, but when the engine started, it sounded like it was only running on two or three cylinders.
i have since taken most of it apart (the head is not off yet), and it appears that i have one bent/broken intake valve on cyl. 1. this struck me as odd, as i think it should have bent both intake valves on cyl 1. when both intake valves move at the same time, how do you bend/break one and not the other? stranger than that, is when i line up the timing marks, they are dead on - the only weird thing is that the slack in the timing belt is on the wrong side.
sorry for the long first post, but i can't figure out what went wrong. i appreciate any thoughts/opinions/ideas.
thanks
