Default using a plasma cutter

i just got a used thermal dynamic plasma cutter and this will be the 1st time ever using one. im just going to cut some scrap metal for now to play with. when cutting do i put the tip on the metal or hold it back some. is it like a MiG how you can burn the tip to the metal if holding it to close ?

depending on your settings and how thick the material is, you will be close to it, but not touching it. you should be able to get finger tips that go on over the existing nozzle tip that acts as a touch finger for how close you should be. once you get it setup up properly and get used to it it will be just like a hot knife through warm butter.

I hold the nozzle against the material.

It gives cleaner cuts and tips are cheap!
