tick tick tick tick....
whats up everybody?!
i recently acquired a 94 accord ex coupe with low miles and have been slowly but surely bringing her to life... i gave her about a 90% tuneup (plugs, cap, rotor, coolant) I put an AEM v2 intake on her and I even adjusted the valve clearances. (wow right... whatever)... Anyhow i cant seem to find the location of a pretty annoying tick. I know our engines (f22b1 anyway) are notorious for valve train clicking... but this is different. It is most noticeable during low acceleration. doesnt matter if from a stop or moving... its not low grade fuel! its not a misfire!
I havent bothered checking the ignition timing as of yet but I just dont see that being the problem...will do tomorrow anyway...
DOES ANYONE have this problem or a direction I should take in tracking this blasted tick tick tick tick and eliminitating it? PLEASE HELP!!!
Thank you in advance folks. ONE!

i had a bit of valve tick, had them adjusted, and now its fine, except for on startup on really cold days.......
does the ambiet temperature matter for your tick?

is this normal for these gaps between the block and exhaust mani gasket on f22b1?http://www.hondasociety.net/up...5.JPG

I have the same exact problem with my 94 accord it was the lifters cause i had a new headgakset instaleld and they adjusted everyhitng put it back to together and worked like a beauty. But then after about a week of it adjusted loosend up agian and right back to ticking.Plus i had to much oil in the crank case and it was smoking like a **** fixed that and the check engine light. But it is the lifters wether you adjust them or not i think they will still tick.
A leaking header / head gasket could cause a 'ticking' noise if it's limited to a single exhaust port.
A loose Spark Plug could also make noise mistaken for a 'tick'
I know on the later F22B(2) Variants (SOHC non/Vtec) the was a service bulletin involving valve 'tick' noise issues caused by rocker shaft / follower wear. I don't know if it involves the B(1) Variant....

Yeah I gotta blow my bullshit alarm on that one as well! Overhead cams don't have pushrods but every engine has to have a way to keep the valve lash to a minimum and give the lifters something to pivot on.

leaking header or spark plug hmmm... about a week ago i removed the heat shield from the exhaust mani... if there were a leak at the header would the heat shield have muffled the TICK???
maybe a spark plug oil seal has gone gaga... i dunno.... the onbly thing that PUZZLES me is .... the offending tick is only audible when the car is in gear!
in nuetral i could rev as low or high as i want and she sounds great!
weird~

does it at all sound like it could be transmission related....like an axle maybe?

hope its not tranny related... i know nothing about trannys!
i mean the shifts arent flawless but they seem fine ... ive driven worse ... but since the ticking is more noticeable with the windows closed maybe.
as far as the axle goes... im gonna say NAH. riding along in Nuetral shes flawless.

Once and for all
#1 All Honda automobiles have solid lifters (no pushrods) even V6 models, they are all adjustable.
#2 The rocker arms ride directly on the cams with a pivot in the middle and push the valve open on the other side. (the configuration can vary so i left it a little vauge)
#3 Older generation accords have ticking valves no matter how perfect they are adjusted. The noise can be heard especially on light acceleration and cold mornings.
Hope that helps some

u are correct ..overhead cam do not have lifters,,,,,,,rocker arms attached to cam pivot and open the valve , valve spring will close valve..

I'm so confused????? I never actually looked at the engines (Honda) hard enough to know for sure. I just figured the cam pushed it down, and the spring pushed it back up, and there were no lifters. I'm definitely not a mechanic.
I found it very hard to set the valves. I needed three hands. one for the feeler gague, one for the adjusting screw, and one for the jam nut. I had set them too tight, and had to get them readjusted. But I did the job I set out to do, which was the o-rings under the rockerarms. So I considered it a victory.

There is actually a special tool for that it's a screwdriver and 10mm (or 12mm) socket all in one handy tool. Definately worth the money if your going to be doing a lot of valve adjustments.
Here it is.

Just kidding.

ya i set my intakes to .009 in. and my exhaust to .011 in. and i must say i felt the difference in responsiveness immediately...
as for older accord having this tick... i dunno. i think i can tell the difference between valve train noise, pinging... and this horrible ticking.
im only allowed five posts???
anyway i havent had a chance to check the header for a leak or the plugs for a leak but its worth a try tomorrow... only thing is...again the noise is only audible when in gear and the engine is under load! i guess ill put the heat shield on and see if changes the sound or frequency then maybe ill disable each cylinder 1 by 1 to isolate the tick...
