tranny grinding noise, could be pilot bearing?
alright i have a 90 si hatch, stock. i replaced the clutch 20k ago with an exedy clutch kit and for awhile everything was fine. recently ive noticed a grinding noise when my car is in gear or in nuetral with the clutch released. when i push the clutch in the noise stops. the reason i think it might be the pilot bearing is because i found the new pilot bearing a few days after the clutch installation and realized that i just used the old one. some others tell me its the throwout bearing, some say just add more fluid to the tranny. any ideas?

its not a throw out bearing if it makes noise with clutch peddle out...i need to know what gear it makes it in.. if it makes it in neutral.. when your moving in neutral....all of the internal transaxle bearings can be diagnosed with a road test. make a log of when it growls when it doesnt and then i can help you furhter.....But a throwout bearing is engaged when you push the peddle down.... when the peddle is up it just free wheels....send me a pm when you have the results of the road test..... and 400 dollars to replace a bearing... dys and it will be 20 bucks including tranny fluid.... 400 bucks would be what i would charg someone to do it for them....

Yeah, $400 if you were crazy enough to take it to a shop! Do it yourself! I've rebuilt many Honda transmissions, and the ISB is one of the easiest things to replace. Get a Helm, your toolbox, and a beer and have at it!

Don't bother, the gears are the same in the Si and DX trannies, the only difference is the final drive. If you want to have a tall 5th, find an HF, but good luck with that. With the Si final you still aren't going to get the amazing HF milage, but it will be an improvment (~1000 RPM drop at highway speed). This link can show you what to expect with tranny hybrids.

what happened when it died? tow ride home? mine is making this same stupid noise, shop said $300 to take apart the transmission and however much the bearings cost...my car is stock...so i think i will just leave it in and learn how to swap a transmission then.
