JDM DC2 headlights... pretty badly scratched, need help refinishing!

whats up fellas... I tried a few searches and did some reading, but I couldnt find exactly what I was looking for... I've got some Sir-G headlights (chrome) and I'm blacking them out myself to save some money... On to my question... These have some pretty bad scratches on them... they're not severly deep, but still pretty rough... I need some help from someone who has been in this same situation, and has actually done this for themselves and knows that it works and also, what to use... a buddy of mine told me that he uses a rubbing compound, and then a polishing compound and that brings them back to mint... since these are pretty rough scratches, he suggested I start out with some sandpaper and wetsand, gradually increasing the grit as I go.... When I get to about 1000 grit or so, THEN use the rubbing compound, followed by the polish....
Anyone have any input on this topic?? once again, I already searched but was unable to find exactly what I was looking for.. so please dont tell me to go search : P

yeh its pretty nasty... but that is the only real blemish on the lights, so they should definitely come out very nice....
can anyone suggest a grit to start with?? I was thinking maybe 800ish to start out, work my way to 2500... then rubbing compound, then polish...

umm.. it's kind of a pain in the *** and requires you to re-seal them... if you're really interested in taking them apart...
1) preheat your oven to 250... wrap a cookie sheet with tinfoil, keep it OUT of the oven while it preheats...
2) wrap the 2 tabs on the BOTTOM of your JDM lights so they dont melt while sitting in the oven..
3) cook them 1 at a time for about 5-7 minutes...
3.5) there is only 1 screw in the back of these lights that hold the gray portion to the lens... this must be removed/replaced while the sealant is still gooey... take it out now..
4) start at the inner portion of your headlight (city lights) with a small flathead... pull back the gray tabs that hold the lens on, and carefully but forcefully pull them apart....
The glue is hella strong, it's much easier said than done... but I got them off...
Think about it really hard before you decide to take them apart... remember, you must re-seal the lens onto the gray portion... no moisture can get in, or else it could be devastating to your bulbs and just makes it look shitty... best of luck!!
