im pretty sure its the ECU...
i know the EVO also has digital miles, and when my friend intalled his EMS he was able to have the option to change the miles...

The miles are not on the ECU. I run AEM and I still have all my miles. I have never seen a Honda set up that way. Most are in the cluster, I dont know of any other way

can you change the miles with the AEM, or its not an option for the s2k?

I did some research on s2ki and I came across some news, some members mentioned that the cars mileage will reset back to zero on the cluster if it was changed. Some still say the cars mileage is recorded on the cluster and there still are some claiming the cars ecu is what records the mileage. Calling all s2k gods, give me a answer
As far as I know it's both. The milage is recorded by the cluster, but the ECU also knows the milage of the car. What leads me to believe this is that I know someone who bought an S2k without a cluster (stolen), but replaced it and was able to reset the milage from the ECU.
It's probably both. The ECU monitors the mileage.. If the cluster is ever changed out, the ECU still holds the mileage but under the original # from the original cluster. The ECU then probably keeps track of the mileage for the new # from the new cluster. The cluster probably has memory also and keeps the mileage as to display it correctly.
It's stored in the cluster (at least up to '04, haven't dealt with anything beyond that). I've swapped ecu's and the mileage did not change. Work at a dealership in case anyone wonders how I was able to swap ecu's with the immobilizer system.
