Default OMFG... just money shifted.. help me out..

well, i was messing around with one of my friends on the way home today, and we went at it.. i was in third, pulling pretty good, go to shift into 4th, and i missed, pegged the limiter, so i put it in neutral, and went to shift into fourth... but missed again, and went to second instead... luckily i noticed it before much happened, or so at least i think.. i checked my VAFC, and it had said i pegged 9402 rpm.. oh shiiiit. the car still runs fine. just a little bit of a exhaust note change,,, it kind of burbles at idle..., like i have some wicked cams in it,.. and the valves tap a lil louder than before..i already needed a valve adjustment... it still runs fine, but what could have happened:?? im pretty sure i didnt bend a valve, but is it possible that i knocked a valve out of spec?? would a valve adjustment help?? maybe a valve got knocked loose, and just needs to be re-seated.. help me out... thanks

You've got bent valves.

The rocker arms aren't going to become loose from this. Do a compression test and you'll find out if your valves are gone or not.

ok, if i did have bent valves, and the car still ran fine.. would there be any downs to driving it still?? until i get my second block and head built??

the car still runs fine... doesnt idle irratically, doesnt die, doesnt even hesitate... and there is no noticable loss of power...

Open your door all the way (with engine running) and put your hand on the top of the door if you feel your car rumbling you need to get that **** fixed, cheap trick but it works. Driving with bent valves is kinda like walking on a broken bone, it's do-able but it's just going to make things worse...

just for now sell your head as a blown core to someone building a new head, for about $250

then get a headgasket for $45, headstuds you already needed, and a working head for $400

you're home free for only $200 (thats what I did on my 1232 at 8000 RPM on a stock head)

you bent the valves, probably just the outer lip of the valve. not bad enough to make the car not run, but enough to need replacing...

How did you pull off missing 2 gears?

I was sorta going to ask the same question.... one time i dropped from 5th to 2nd on the freeway racing a lame *** dsm.... LOL.... once I dropped it in, i slammed that sucker back out... i think i may have bent a valve.... but I really dont think so... the rpm's only got up to about 5000 before i slammed it out... i was so scared =p

I Have missed a shift, went from 3rd gear (at red line) into 2nd, doh!! my VFAC read 9.5K. I did a compression check right after and had 190spi in all 4, so I must of been lucky ...I have actually done this twice now.

I went 1232, the RPMS screamed up! I don't know how far it went, but I had a compression test performed and it was all okay.

Did I mention that this was on the way to having my car stored for the winter?

My friend did a similar thing when he was on the highway... went to pass, downshifted from 5th to 2nd on accident and bent his valvetrain up nice .. the car still ran for 2 months after but it ran like **** and he got about 13 mpg..

how do you throw from 5th to 2nd? that makes no sense to me!!! i mean, it takes a little effort to more the shifter out of nuetral into second.

my friend did this shift in his 97 base. drove around for about 2 weeks without fixing it...and then an exhaust valve in the #3 cylinder broke off! everything in #3 was gone, including piston, rod, other valves, and spark plug. and these were skunk2 valves i'm talking about! he ruined his entire motor driving like this, so i would say don't drive your car with bent valves for a week at the most.

LOL, you obviously have no idea that it happens often. It even happens to people who track a lot. It has nothing to do with "driving skill". It has to do with the fact that the tranny moves during hard acceleration, and the fact that you need to shift faster. It happens.

If you haven't done it before, just be thankful it hasn't.

The one time i ever money shifted was at the track. I went from 3rd to 2nd caught it right away and though it out of gear before anything happened. I was really lucky and never plan on coming that close again.

i had no idea there was a were specific hand positions. i only hold my shifter one way no matter what gear im shifting into.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by AnthonyG2003 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">how do you throw from 5th to 2nd? that makes no sense to me!!! i mean, it takes a little effort to more the shifter out of nuetral into second. </TD></TR></TABLE>

i was wondering this too, id have trouble FORCING it into 2nd gear if im going above 45mph... ill admit i almost pulled 3rd at redline to 2nd instead of 4th.. but it simply didnt go in.. when i accidently tried pulling it into 2nd it grinded a tad and i just let it out right away.

Oh... My bad then. I used to auto x my 89 lude fairly often, and i drove on the street like i was on the track. I guess i was just lucky then. I seriously never heard of this being a common issue, but if it is i'm sorry. I've missed gears going up when i'm really not paying attention, never been unlucky enough to 5-2 it.

see, thats the scary part... it just SLID right into second, like it was fourth... you'd think that the shifter would give you some sort of sign, it was the wrong gear... but nope.. nuthin, until i see my tach pegged at like 6 o'clock... i was like OHHHH EXPLETIVE.....

If I'm in a straight-line race on a straight strip of road, I don't even downshift... I just stay in one gear until the RPMs raise, then I just stomp on it.
