CEL with no cat on j-b16a? + rattle Q?
Hey. Here's some quick background:
Not sure what the "arm" is called, but it runs off of the side of the rods running from my shift lever up to the engine or whatever. This "arm" is laying right against my cat and it rattles @ certain RPMs.
If anyone knows how I can readjust this so that it's not laying against my cat (it wasn't before) without f*ing something up, I'd love to hear it. I thought about just crawling under there and bending it up off the cat, but I don't want to get the shift rods, or whatevers running up to the engine to actually shift the gears, out of whack and cause a MAJOR problem trying to fix this minor one...SO:
I'm getting a new exhaust put in and I'm considering dropping the cat to silence the rattle. I've heard some newer b16's come up with a CEL when the cat is dropped.
So, it looks like there may be a coupla ways to solve the same problem, so if anyone knows if I can just "relocate" (bend) the errant arm off the cat, or if it's safe and reliabe to drop the cat w/out suffering a CEL, I'd be really grateful for your replies.
BTW I'd be getting the exhaust installed/cat dropped this week, so if you could take the time to post ASAP that'd be great.
And just for the record I'd prefer to keep the cat if there's gonna be a big increase in volume.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

AWESOME.
Thanks for all your replies...I really needed that 1st hand input.
Since you've weighed in with your experience, could you let me know how loud it is compared to a catted exhaust? And of course what kind of exhaust you're running as that'll make a difference too, right?
Thanks alot for your help!!!

I've got a thermal r&d exhaust and it's pretty quiet actually, that is of course from inside the car. I've never let anyone gun it when I'm outside of it.
I had straight pipe put in when I first got the swap, had no trouble with clearance for the shift linkage. I did get a cat put in with my new exhaust (it smelled gross and i felt bad about polluting), and it does touch the shift linkage...I guess kinda the opposite of you
.
Kinda OT, but to reassure you (even if it is a little late) I had straight piping, and it did fit perfectly, and no Check engine light because the old cars didn't have that o2 sensor. But str8 pipe SmELLs!

What is this thing you call a "cat"? Even after my first ZC swap, when I put my Thermal Cat-Back, and DC header on, I could never find it again. I assume the cat goes somewhere, between the header and cat-back. Straight pipes do smell a little bit, but hey they are way less restrictive. Occasionly you can shoot fireballs out the back too, under decelleration. Mine is still realatively quiet, haven't been pulled over yet. I don't beleive my linkage hits, I am using 90-93 TEG linkage cut to fit with a b16.
Alright this is great info! I do have a couple addt'l Q's though...
Exactly how bad is "the smell"?? Is it totally unbearable, or is it just a burning gas and engine smell(duh)?? The main reason I ask is that this is my daily driver and I roll with the windows down for the most part (8,000 rpms bouncing off an overpass is a beautiful thing
) and want to know what your collective experiences with "the smell" are. Is it gonna make ME smell like a race car when I get out? I mean, it's not that bad is it?
Thanks again for all your replies! I've posted a coupla Q's before with, uh, less than enthusiastic responses, so I do appreciate your time.

It isn't bad, it is just noticable. Expecially if you run rich. You can tell a difference though, whoever is behind you can even more. If you want it to smell good use Sunoco 94. The best street gas you can buy.
