Default 909 header shootout - DTR-Fab, Highend, Rage

OK well we were able to do a complete dyno comparison of the three headers last night at Hookups Import Tek in Upland, Ca. Before I get into the header shootout info, sheepey and I just want to thank everyone that made this possible:

Chris @ Hookups for staying late to provide his incredible tuning services as well as the use of his dyno. Also him and his employees did most of the work on swapping the headers (with a little help from Jason).

Jason @ Rage for taking time out of his day and money out of his pocket for new spark plugs and other supplies, and for supplying a header to test even though he didn't know about this til day of.

Mike @ Highend for providing us with one of their new headers to test, and coming to hang out while we tested it.

Eric @ Revolt Race Tuning for last-minute VAFC install, checking the car over and generally making sure everything was ok before we blasted it on the dyno.

Everyone else who showed up to help by taking vids, or just hanging out

909 HEADER SHOOTOUT - THE HEADERS

I'm not going to make specific comments about quality under each header as I feel it would be a waste of time. All the headers we tested were of amazing quality. All were stainless, the Highend and Rage-supplied headers were polished while the DTR-fab was raw. I would give the DTR header a slight edge in weld quality but all the headers had remarkably clean and attractive welds. Bottom line is you won't be dissapointed with the quality of any of these headers.

DTR-Fab - I'm sure everyone is familiar with Danny's high-quality headers and fabrication work. Company is now called Six Sigma. This was the first header sheepey had on the car, Chris re-tuned for it before we tested the others. This header was originally designed for a 92mm stroke x 85.5mm bore engine, and so may not have been optimum for sheepey's smaller motor.

Highend - Similar to the Spark Racing header, but noticeably better quality. In previous testing these made slightly more power than the Spark header (on a different motor than the one we are testing here). Only header tested using 1-2 and 3-4 primary pairings...

Rage-supplied - Uses the same 1-3 2-4 primary pairings as the DTR header.

909 HEADER SHOOTOUT - THE RESULTS

All tuning by Chris Whitfield (Hookups Import Tek) with VAFC, all results were open header...

(run 005 = DTR, run 008 = highend, run 18 = rage)

(run 005 = DTR, run 008 = highend, run 18 = rage)

As you can see, the Highend header did extremely well considering it is what most would call a "budget" header. It stays very close to the other two headers throughout the RPM range, losing out on top by about 7hp and in the midrange by about the same.

The Rage-supplied header produced slightly less top-end power than the DTR-Fab, but overall the Rage-supplied piece was the clear winner. It produced more power than the other two headers almost all the way through the RPM range, particularly between 6k and 7k. The DTR header pulled even around 7250, and from then on the two headers were neck and neck until around 8750 when the DTR pulled ahead slightly and held this advantage until shutoff at ~9k.

When you look at the power curves you have to consider that the DTR header was designed for a larger motor (92mm x 85.5mm) - the power might have come on earlier in a motor pushing that much more air.

Considering that the Rage-supplied header is priced a little bit more than the Highend header and still a fair amount less than the DTR, we have to say that it performed admirably in this comparison. As always, your results may vary depending on exact motor setup.

just a quick vouch for Chris (HOOKUPS) tuning skills. We decided to buy the Rage header, so after the testing was done we bolted the exhaust back up and Chris did a final tune before we drove it away. Check out the results:

(horsepower with Rage header and full exhaust no cat)

(check out the A/F!! and that was done tuning with VAFC only...)

I think that was a great little test session - nothing planned just show up and test...perfect. Chris has a cool setup for this type of deal, Im going to try and work w/hookups on other part testing. Im still setback on how easy the test was, Highend ( mike ? ) was nice to supply something out of his pocket and proved that you dont need 800 to make power. Not to mention coming out after a full day at work to the 909 to be apart of the testing. Chris was the workhorse of the deal suppling the shop/dyno/skills/time to do this for everyone with nothing to gain but knowledge. As well as both of the Alex's for the car and the camera ( and the write up ) that was also out of their time with nothing to gain but info.....simply perfect. Glad I got to be around to see it all go down -

Jason Whitfield

thanks to all peeps that came out , hookups will be carrying both the highend header as well as the rage header , both of which work awesome especially considering the price compared to the $1200.00 (what i was told) DTR unit, i believe both of these headers(RAGE,HIGHEND) will retail for about 1/2 that price(no quotes) I still have all three headers here so if you have another awesome header that you would like tested please feel free to contact me

GREAT POST TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE INVOLVED!!!

Posts like these are what really make this site benefical to everyone. I'm in the market for a new header and with posts like these I can really see what my money will get me.

But dam now I have to make a decision.

I would love to see some dyno time with this header
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1441825

I would love to see how it compares to that Rage header, which really impressed me!!

Well it's always good to see header comparisons, but I will say this about the DTR header, from the looks of that header it's his hi hp header. It looks identical to the one Jason Hunt and I tested. So it's no surprise that the mid range wasn't up to the other headers (at least the Highend) that are generic B series pieces.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by revolt_allmotor &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">
Rage - According to Jason Whitfield (owner of Rage), he has been working on perfecting these for over a year, and it shows. Uses the same 1-3 2-4 primary pairings as the DTR header.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Frankly I don't know why it would take that long to "perfect" the design when to me it looks like a direct copy of the HyTech header, even down to the 2 piece design and support bracket! It almost looks like they just removed the Hytech badge, polished the spot welds up and called it their own. Here's a pic of the HyTech production header from the Endyn site.

just a note-
the DTR header (now six sigma) used was the "big tubed" design, and was made for a 92x85.5 engine. i bought it used directly from danny of dtr then sold/traded it to sheepey.

another note - i think i'm pretty much sold on the Rage header (especially for the price, email or call him guys!) and on Chris's (hook ups) tuning skillz
