Default question about heater (already searched)

ok so i took my heater and all that junk out a while back. i got it all put back in and just wired the blower motor to a switch so its full blast all the time. ran the hoses back to the heater core and all that stuff. ok its not working. searched on here and found theres a little white lever kind of thing on the core somewhere that can block the air from actually going into the core.

does anyone have a picture of this? or can you just tell me is it the one on the right side bottom of the core that has a cable attatched?

no pic, but is not neccessary, it is the white lever on right side of heater core with the cable attached. Make sure it is in the position away from the firewall.

also make sure the valve in the engine bay is open too, it should be pointing towards the firewall as seen here...

ok one more question.... i just ran the heater for a little while today to see how it was doing, since i straight wired the fan (didnt hook up to switch yet) i just put the power to a constant 12v and grounded the - in a bolt hole...didnt secure it or anything. well after about ...15 - 30 minutes i guess the ground wire got quite hot.

i know thats not good but idont know if it is because of the shitty ground or do i need larger gauge wire...or did i mess it up haha.
