"Sucking Whistle" When Accelerating CRX
I hear this "sucking whistle" when accelerating (1990 CRX Si) - I heard this on my 1989 CRX as well. Seems when the engine is under a slight "load" (going up a hill), and the tach is around 2,000 - 2,800 RPM, I hear this weird whistle. I can play with the pedal to where the whistle is almost constant. The '90 CRX does have a K&N filtercharger on it (I know EW!), but it made this noise even before I stuck that thing on. Any suggestions / answers would be greatly appreciated.
I had the same thing happen to me with my old ZC. I had an intake on it to and I could play with the pedal to keep it constant. It's nothing to worry about I don't think.
On my sister's '90 Si it was the throttle body. It still does it. I think it's just carbon deposits in the passages. If you take your TB off and soak it and then put it back on with a new gasket, it might fix it. I just told my sister it was because I installed a turbo.
Actually, I never messed with the idle screw. Why is that making that whistle? If I adjust that screw, will it mess up the timing for the engine?
I always wanted to raise the idle of the car a bit ... when sitting at a red light (or something), the idle will drop and the whole car will shutter because the idle went too low.
Thanks GUYS!!

Ahh ... If you read my first post in this thread, you would see that the noise was there even BEFORE I installed the K&N Filtercharger.
Thanks anyway.

It won't mess with your timing. It's a brass bleed screw. It increases the amount of air flow at idle. They come from the factory with grey paint over it so if that's gone, someone has messed with it. If the paint is still there, you can scrape it off and adjust the screw. The manual says to unplug the IACV when you're adjusting it, but that would always kill my car.
i have the same problem on my 90 civic si. but mine will whistle one day then not the next.
ive messed with my idle screw to try and see if i could get it to go away,
cleaned my tb and nothin
still makes the noise
btw, my friends 98 civic dx does it too

i had the same problem with my b16....i put an itr intake manifold on with the stock throttle and it started making that noise then i switched it with a rc throttle and it went away...i would say its something in your throttle body....hth
My '89 LX used to do that when I had the D15 in it. Had an RS Akimoto intake on it, which had been dropped on the floor, leaving a small ding in the edge of the pipe right where the filter clamped on. That ding somehow caught air and made a strange whistle at 2800-3000 RPM.
I could be talking out of my A$$ but, it could just be stock internall air resonances at that certin RPM cause the intake to make a wistle.
I had this on my ZC as well, until I went turbo, It obviously went away.
It could just be stock(?).

guess it's a known problem in ef's then
my 4dr does that as well sounds like an intake but i'm completely stock..
anyone have valves knocking sounds when starting cold and continue when temperature is at operational?
note should i remove the granny box?

well the sound on my car is commin through the tb, cause when i take the intake off and rev it it still makes the sound.
but the wierd thing is, sometimes it makes the sound and other times it doesn't
one day itll be there and the next it wont
