I changed over to Mobil One 5w30 at 13,000 miles and at a little over 16,000 miles I notice my VTEC seemed a little weak and was coming in and out of VTEC over 6,000 rpms. Well recently I checked my oil and it was a little over two quarts low. I don't see any leaks and there's no visible smoke, and my driveway is clean. I'm not sure how long I've been runing with such low oil. I added oil and it seems to run much better, but I don't know if it's just me, it doesn't seem as strong. I've recently ran a Auto-X with twelve runs and a few weeks before took the R down the 1/4 mile a few times. Why is my oil so low? I know when it was changed it took 5 quarts. What type of damage could I've caused with two quarts of low oil? I called Acura and they told me to bring it in on monday to take a look at it. Thank you for any info you can give me.

It's very close to 5 when you change your oil filter as well.
yeah, the ITR and GSR need approximately 4.0-4.2 quarts of oil when changed, even when you are changing the filter
which should happen at every oil change anyway.
Why were you putting 5 quarts in your ITR, it's just not good for it. Did you drive around for while after putting in 4.0 quarts to see what the oil settled to after driving when the filter fills up and such? Just don't go pouring in 5 quarts when you dump in the initial oil, because more than likely the reading on the dipstick will not be as accurate as if you were to drive it around for 5-10 minutes after pouring in the initial 4 quarts. I usually only end up putting four quarts even in every time I change my oil in my GSR.
As for your problem wih "burning" oil, I have no idea how oil just disappears? I don't know if anyone else knows the answer to that one.
Good Luck,
Jon

i think i remember reading awhile back that the more time you spend in vtec the faster your oil burns, i know auto-x can contribute to buring oil like a ****, try a search i think there may be some stuff about it in past posts. -rob
Yup. My ITR burns oil if I spend a lot of time in VTEC (read: hotlapping sessions at the Nashville SuperSpeedway road course). Another friend Trey's ITR does it if he keeps it on the high lobes a lot. Even my friend's Prelude does it.
I think it's just the natural thing for a Honda engine to do at high rpms. I've seen quite a few that do that, and there's nothing wrong with the engines. If it gets worse though, I'd have your rings checked.

Keep your oil levels up if you want your motor to last, esp if you are doing any kind of racing.

That is why. The B18Cs will eat oil under heavy load. It is more noticable with synthetic. My car uses about .5 qt/100 miles on track running Redline 10w30.

i still don't think 12 runs of an autox and some drag strip runs would cause him to be almost two quarts low in oil?
perhaps cam or valve seals? why at such a low mileage, i dunno tho

nothing abnormal about burning oil like that if you are an aggressive driver and stay in VTEC often. it's good to check it weekly... i check my oil every 2 to 3 days.
loss of one quart every 1000 miles is considered normal on most engines, particularly your vtec engine. So you drove 3000 miles and did some extensive hard driving and used 2 quarts, sounds fine to me. Plus your using 5-30 synthetic to boot, so nothing to be concerned with IMO unless you see blue smoke coming out the tail.

Went to Acura today. They said everything is fine no oil leaks, no smoke, and no bad rings. Now I just have to get use to checking my oil level every few days.
i go threw the same thing all the time... I check my oil and it seems like it just evaporates even just weeks after an oil change. No where near 3000 miles after
And like your saying no signs off leaking anywhere
As far as being in VTEC alot.... mainly every shift
So if it is contributed to that i am guessing i should do an oil change every month

At 8000 rpm plus, it's a miracle that the oil control rings get as much oil out of the way as they actually do! Get used to it! I change mine about every 3000 miles so I don't have any big surprises... (and I check it about every week or so!)
my friend races is itr in the NASA series and he say "hondas love oil" so if ur in vtech as much as you say eating up oil is normal...but daaam 2 quarts??!?!? hehe oh well at least ur using ur R for its purposes
..and if ur driving that hard i would do valve adjustments early!!!

Yea like everyone has said this oil burning problem is very common w/ any kind of aggressive driving. When my 98 was running autox's all the time depending on the course it could burn a noticable amount of oil. The more you're in Vtec the worse it gets.
On the flip side my S2k burns oil like hell! Common on s2k's that during break in they loose oil. I have to check my oil at EVERY gas fill up right now. Its tapered off since its first oil change but intially was quite annoying
Oil burning is just a part of Vtec life
