Default why is my car screeching

JDM Prelude

when I start the car I hear a loud screech for a few seconds, then it only happens again when revs are low and I pull away. when it is cold&/or rainy that is. I am pretty sure its the altenator/airconditioning belt if this is the same one. And often when I am pulling away if I off the air conditioning the noise stops. But it allways comes when i start the car.

I tried tightening this belt taking away the little slack there was, it is still causing the same problem. Do I need to change this belt?

Id say change it. and while your there check you p/s belt too. I changed the alt and a/c belt becuase of a squeal and it fixed it and then no more then a month later a new squeal from the p/s. might as well just do both at once.

if you look at the belt if it is glazed (shiny0 or if it has cracks in any way you should replace it.

Yes, change the belts. If you let them screech too long, the contact surface area of the belt gets a glossy finish on it. Obviously, this glossy coat reduces the grip as it touches the pulley.

In short, get a new belt.

I changed all of my belts and it still squeals on start-up (no matter what the temp), but not when I take off. Checked and re-checked to make sure they are tight/loose enough. I've just decided to live with it.

92-96 prelude S (the one with the f22 motor) belt without a/c thats a five rib. you can ask for that length in a 6 rib if they have it. or just use the 5.

Was your a/c turned on when you started up the car? like engaged and running with the fan on? i'm thinking it could possibly be a problem with the a/c compressor unit clutch?

that is, if your belts are brand new and the pullies aren't damaged and rubbing on the sides of the belts (see: misaligned)

The car is screeching because it's being abused.

Are you running an after market Clutch ?

Could be your releasing bearing if it's an aftermarket one.
Same thing happened to me with my RPS 6 Puck Clutch. Luckily I found the problem before it did any permanent damage to the clutch.
